Aberdeen Football Club has withdrawn its plans to sell alcohol within a fan zone area ahead of next month's St Johnstone clash.

The club had looked to gain permission to sell beverages to fans before kick-off, with a fan zone open between 12pm and 2.45pm outside the stadium near the Richard Donald Stand.

It would have seen the Dons team up with Fierce Beer for the event while fans would be required to obtain tickets for the fan zone.

However, the plans have now been withdrawn by the club, with Aberdeen City Council confirming the Dons had pulled their proposal. Aberdeen FC has been approached for comment.

Alcohol has been banned at football stadiums across Scotland since 1980 when a riot at Hampden between Celtic and Rangers fans prompted the move.

It can still be purchased from grounds where other sports are taking place, such as rugby union games at Murrayfield with fans able to drink alcohol at last weekend's game between Scotland and Australia.

Meanwhile Aberdeen have worked to improve the fan experience at Pittodrie in recent months, from themed events on matchdays to pre-match pyro displays and tifos across the ground.
