Ally McCoist has suggested that Joao Felix’s loan move to Chelsea is “absolute madness” as the Atletico Madrid man cannot solve their main issue.

It was initially believed that Arsenal and Manchester United were leading the race to sign Felix after he was made available for a loan by Atletico Madrid.

The Portugal international has fallen out of favour in Spain as he has butted heads with Diego Simeone.

Felix was brilliant in flashes at the World Cup as he was involved in three goals in four appearances.

This form has attracted interest from the Premier League but Atletico Madrid have been demanding over £9m as a loan fee and they want Felix’s next club to commit to signing him in the summer for £70.5m.

These demands put off Arsenal and Man Utd so Chelsea have pushed ahead to beat their rivals to the signing.

The Blues have reached a ‘verbal agreement’ to sign him after meeting Atletico’s lofty demands. The transfer is expected to be finalised in the coming days.

This signing is a boost for Chelsea amid their ongoing injury woes. Reece James, N’Golo Kante, Armando Broja and Raheem Sterling are among their players currently out of action.

The addition of Felix does come across as a panic signing after they were knocked out of both domestic cup competitions by Man City. They are also down in tenth in the Premier League.

McCoist is not overly sold on Felix as he is not “consistent enough”.

“That’s an interesting one. I can’t believe they’re paying £9million for a loan now, £9million for a loan, that is what’s happening. Absolute madness,” McCoist told talkSPORT (via Express).

“I like Joao Felix, I don’t think he’s the answer to Chelsea’s problems, they need a centre forward. Plus, I don’t think he’s consistent enough.

“I watched him closely in the World Cup and I thought he did some brilliant things, I thought he had one or two good games, but he’s one of those players, for me, that leaves you wanting a little bit more.”

Fabrizio Romano confirmed on Tuesday morning that Chelsea’s pursuit of Felix became ‘urgent’ among their ‘injuries and recent results’.

‘Chelsea and Atletico Madrid are now completing final details of Joao Felix deal as Blues want to be fast and get it 100% sealed this week,’ Romano wrote for Caught Offside.

‘There’s a full agreement on personal terms as Joao has accepted Chelsea move – they will cover his full salary until June 30. It should be closed in the next 24-48 hours.

‘Chelsea decided to activate Joao Felix option on Monday morning as the injuries and also the recent results made it urgent. They wanted to give Graham Potter more help by signing Felix.

‘It will be a loan for more than €11m, with Chelsea meeting Atletico’s demands.’
