“They Abused Us” – Virender Sehwag Recalls His Debut Against Pakistan
Virender Sehwag one of the most destructive batsmen of all time has recalled the memories of his debut match. Sehwag made his debut in 1999 at the young age of 21 against arch-rivals Pakistan in Mohali at Bindra Stadium. The veteran batsman went on scoring more than 8000 runs in both ODIs and Test, with the destructive strike rate of 104.34 and 82.23 respectively.
Sehwag revealed how several Pakistani players welcomed him on the field while he came to bat on his debut. 21 year old had to face a lot of abuses from Shahid Afridi, Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Yousuf, and other players from the Pakistan team.
” I was around 20-21 when I made my debut, player like Shoaib Akhtar, Mohammad Yousuf, Shahid Afridi, welcomed me by abusing a lot, Which I hadn’t even heard before,” Sehwag said to RJ Raunak on his YouTube channel
” I couldn’t do much because it was my first match and I was very nervous. I had never imagined playing in front of 20-25000 people. So back then I couldn’t do much. Later when I became a player then I take revenge on each Pakistani player by scoring 300 at Multan” Sehwag added.

Right-handed Batsman has a great record against Pakistan, scoring 1071 runs in 31 ODIs and 1276 runs in 9 Test matches with a phenomenal average of 91.14. Sehwag had scored his maiden 300 against Pakistan at Multan thus earning him the title of “Multan Ka Sultan”.
Recently, Virender Sehwag stated that former Sri Lankan spinner Muttiah Muralitharan is the toughest bowler he has faced in his career. Murali is regarded as one of the greatest spinners of all time. Veteran spinner had played 133 Tests bagging 800 wickets under his belt.
“Murali is one of the lethal bowlers he had faced in his career, it took me 7-8 years to tackle the spinner. Whenever I used to play against Sri Lanka, I always used to fear Murali,” he concluded.
