Ada girls finish second at Pottsboro tournament

Mar. 26—POTTSBORO, Texas — The Ada High School girls golf team turned in another strong performance during a spring break trip to the Cardinal Classic hosted by the Tanglewood Resort Golf Course in Pottsboro, Texas.

The Lady Cougars finished second in the Texas trip after shooting a team score of 362. Frisco won the championship with a score of 350. Gunter was a stroke behind Ada with a 363 and Sanger was fourth at 409.

Ada was the only Oklahoma team in the field.

"This was a great experience for us to compete with schools that we didn't know and of course, they didn't know us," Ada girls golf head coach Ron Anderson told The Ada News.

"I chuckled at how the girls were so impressed at how cordial and friendly the Texas girls were with us," he continued. "I told them it's because they don't have a clue who we are and the block A doesn't mean a thing to them."

The Lady Cougars had to venture south to the Cardinal Classic because Ada's spring break was the week before most other Oklahoma schools were out and there wasn't a tournament in the Sooner State available during that span.

"That was the closest tournament available in Texas," Anderson said. "The Tanglewood Resort Golf Course was in very good condition for this time of season and it was good to compete against schools from another state. It was a successful trip."

Caitlin Badillo of Gunter, Texas, won the medalist crown with a score of 78. Senior London Wilson paced the Ada effort with an 82, four strokes off the top mark.

"London again had a great day. She was hitting the ball so well. She played better than she scored," Anderson said.

Fellow senior Ava Manwell carded an 87 for the Lady Cougars.

"Ava Manwell, playing in her first tournament, turned in a very good score of 87," Anderson said. "The others also played well."

Brooklyn Black followed with a 93 and Dani McTague was next with a 96. Bella Stowers shot an even 100 and was followed by Kenzie Qualls with a 101 and Natalie Jussely with a 106.

"We'll have to continue to get better with each tournament because everyone else will also," Anderson said.

The Ada girls are about to get busy with seven tournaments coming up over the next two weeks.

Ada was at the Ardmore Tournament on Monday and travels to the Dickson Lady Comet Invitational Thursday.

"Because Friday is not a school instructional day, the girls (and the Ada boys) will compete in the first-ever Southeast 6 Conference Tournament," Anderson said.

That tournament will be hosted by the McAlester Country Club and will include the host Buffaloes, Durant, Broken Bow, Ardmore, Poteau and Shawnee.

The Lady Cougars will compete in the Southern Oklahoma Girls Invitational on April 2 in Duncan and The Turner Invitational at the Falconhead Country Club on April 4.

Ada had opened the season March 12 at the Durant Punch Out and finished as runners-up at the event too.
