Ada hangs on for win over Roff

Mar. 29—TUPELO — The Ada High slow-pitch softball team found itself locked in an epic battle with Roff during its season opener on March 18. The host Lady Tigers outlasted Ada 18-16 in the crazy matchup.

The two teams collided again Thursday morning in the first round of the 2024 Beast of the East Tournament and it was another wild affair.

Sophomore Makenna Howell hit a two-run homer in the top of the sixth inning and that blast proved to be the difference in Ada's 8-7 win over Roff. Ada improved to 2-4 on the year and was scheduled to play Silo later in the day in a winner's bracket contest. Roff — ranked No. 11 in Class A — fell to an even 9-9 and also played in a consolation contest later Thursday in Beast of the East action.

Ada 8, Roff 7

Roff's Sophie Eldred hit a one-out single in the bottom of the sixth, but Ada pitcher Rylynn Truett stranded that RHS base runner after recording a strikeout and getting Brianna Bess to hit into a fielder's choice to end the contest via the time limit.

Both teams scored four runs each in the first inning and Roff held a slim 7-6 lead through five innings.

Ariana Munoz hit a two-run homer for the Lady Cougars and Bess ripped a three-run shot for the Lady Tigers.

Brayleigh Stephens paced Ada at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored. The Lady Cougars totaled seven hits, including doubles from Abbey Strong and Josie Morgan. Strong finished 1-for-1 with two walks and scored a run and Truett went 1-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and two runs scored.

Roff piled up 12 hits in the loss, including two each from Emma Hardison, Payton Smith, Shelby Ensey, Bess and Eldred. Bess finished 2-for-3 with a walk, three RBIs and two runs scored and Hardison went 2-for-3 and scored twice. Eldred and Ensey both slapped doubles for the Lady Tigers.
