Addiction Awareness Week is back for its third year, helping to raise awareness about addiction and combating its stigmas.

Organised by Action Addiction, the week-long campaign takes place from October 28 to November 4.

This year’s theme is Everybody Knows Somebody and its aim is to encourage meaningful conversations while exploring the power of connections and friendships through addiction recovery.

The aim of the week, which will feature online events and discussions, is to help people develop a better understanding of addiction.

Last year, the Princess of Wales shared a poignant message of support for the event, having worked with a number of mental health and addiction charities and organisations in the past.

An even bigger audience is expected this year, as well as plenty of support from Action Addiction’s growing community.

Here’s a look at how you can take part yourself this year, as well as how to get support for yourself or a loved one.

How to take part in Addiction Awareness Week 2023

This year, Action Addiction is encouraging people to join a national online presentation called Let’s Talk About Addiction.

Broadcast from The Brink, Liverpool, this event will bring together a series of special guests to talk about addiction.

You can register here to save your spot for the upcoming digital event.

Other ways to get involved include sharing your story of addiction to inspire others if you feel comfortable, or hosting an event to raise awareness around the issue.

People who want to help raise awareness online can use hashtags #AAW2023 or #AddictionAwarenessWeek2023 to support more conversations around addiction.

How to get support during Addiction Awareness Week

If you are in a crisis situation, call 999 to get immediate support. If it’s not an emergency but you need support with addiction, there are a number of ways to reach out.

The Forward Trust’s chatline provides free, confidential advice on a range of issues, including drug or alcohol worries and mental health, and is open between 9am and 3pm, Monday through Friday.

Clouds House is also recommended by Action Addiction as a provider of life-saving residential treatment for people from all walks of life.

For ongoing support or medical care, you should also contact your GP to be guided to local support groups. Taking part in group sessions such as Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, or Gamblers Anonymous is hugely beneficial for many people.
