AFC Wimbledon will refer to MK Dons by full name in League Cup first round

AFC Wimbledon will refer to Milton Keynes Dons by their full name for the first time when they meet in the EFL Cup first round on Tuesday evening.

It follows talks with the EFL after Wimbledon referred to their rivals as ‘MK’ on the scoreboard and on the programme cover for their last meeting at Kingsmeadow in 2017.

AFC were charged with misconduct, but it was later dropped by the EFL.

The club must now adhere to several rules, including displaying “the name of the MK Dons on the website, match tickets, match programmes, teamsheets and scoreboard (as applicable) in a manner that is consistent with all other teams that visit."

Emotions are still raw, but Wimbledon manager Wally Downes insists Tuesday's clash is "just another game."

When asked by the Guardian if the 2003 move still angers those associated with Tuesday's hosts, he replied: "Oh yeah. To have it ripped away as it was, it was a disastrous time for anyone that had any affinity with the club.

"The fact that it has never been allowed to happen again shows what a terrible decision it was.

"It has been well documented who the people were that made that decision. I can never remember who they are …”
