Former Aston Villa star Gabby Agbonlahor has sent a rousing endorsement to the club over transfer target Calvin Bassey, from Rangers.

Bassey has had a breakout season with Rangers during this campaign. The 22-year-old made 50 appearances in all competitions, after debuting last season.

The left-back put in a number of solid performances in each competition. He was part of a solid Rangers defence, who conceded just 31 league goals.

He also showed his qualities in the final third of the pitch, providing six assists over the course of the season. Bassey was vital in the side’s European run, playing every minute in the knockout portion of the competition.

He was one of the shining lights in Rangers’ Europa League final display, despite the loss. Pundit Ally McCoist described the defender as “phenomenal” after the match.

Given his fantastic season, a number of sides have reportedly registered an interest. Namely Aston Villa, whose manager Steven Gerrard worked with Bassey at Rangers before taking charge at Villa Park.

Former Villa man Agbonlahor feels keeping hold of Bassey may be a challenge for Rangers.

“The problem with Rangers and Celtic is they can’t pay the money that teams in the Premier League can. [Connor] Goldson’s trying to move for financial reasons,” he told Football Insider.

“What can Rangers offer Bassey? That’s the issue. He could probably get double the money at Aston Villa.

“I’m sure he would be reluctant to sign a new contract and see what is out there for him, to be honest.”

Agbonlahor feels Bassey has the qualities for clubs to want to take him on board.

“There will be clubs out there for him, 1000 per cent. He’s quick, calm on the ball, strong and good in the air,” he added.

Agbonlahor also feels Villa – who have been linked – would be a good landing spot for the youngster.

“I’d take him at Aston Villa tomorrow. A lot of clubs in the Premier League will look at him,” he said.

The Rangers man appears a top player, after one full season in the Scottish Premiership. His versatility will be an attractive asset to a lot of sides, given he can play as both a left-back and centre-back.

Gerrard is likely keen on his former star, given the form he has been in of late. He could certainly be a good asset for the Villans to take on board.
