A Patrick Ah Van double gave bottom side Widnes Vikings only their second Super League victory of the season as St Helens suffered a 16-14 defeat at the Select Security Stadium on Friday.
Saints caretaker coach Derek Traynor masterminded a win over leaders Castleford Tigers last time out, but they were unable to prevent Widnes from claiming a first home success of the season.
Joe Mellor's try put the Vikings in front and Ah Van dived over in the corner to restore their advantage after Theo Fages' converted score had brought Saints level.
Widnes were pegged back again just before the break when Matty Smith powered his way over against his former club and Mark Percival added the extras to make it 12-12 at the break.
Percival's penalty put Saints in front for the first time early in the second half, but Ah Van settled it for Denis Betts' struggling side by crashing over for his second try of the night nine minutes from time.
