Ajax and Tottenham have confirmed the transfer of Steven Bergwijn to the Eredivisie giants following two-and-a-half years in north London.

Bergwijn struggled for game time at Spurs last season as Antonio Conte took charge in November. What’s more, the arrival of Dejan Kulusevski in January put Bergwijn’s future in further doubt.

As a result, the Netherlands international winger sought to move on, with a move back to his home country in his sights for the former PSV Eindhoven star.

Despite hiccups along the way, Ajax have got their man, with Bergwijn penning a five-year deal in Amsterdam.

Ajax head coach Alfred Schreuder told the club’s official website: “It is indicative of Steven’s ambition that he chose to make the step to Ajax.

“He is a player with many qualities. He has enormous drive and is also very goal-oriented.

“Of course, I am happy that we were able to sign him, he adds new quality to our team.”

Ajax confirmed that Bergwijn has cost them €31.25million (£26.4million) from Tottenham. Spurs said in their statement: “We wish Stevie all the best for the future.”

The winger arrives at the Amsterdam club as Sebastian Haller departs. The signing from West Ham has moved to Borussia Dortmund to help replace Manchester City’s new striker Erling Haaland.

Bergwijn, who moved to Tottenham under former manager Jose Mourinho, made an instant impact on debut. His goal helped down Manchester City in a thrilling Premier League encounter.

Last season, meanwhile, his late double off the bench secured Spurs three vital points away at Leicester as they eventually finished in the top four.

In between those moments, though, Bergwijn struggled to enjoy a regular role under Mourinho, Nuno Espirito Santo or Conte.

The winger wrote in a farewell message: “Dear Spurs fans, thank you for all the great moments and memories.

“It was an honour to have been part of this beautiful club. All the best. COYS.”

Tottenham move on under Conte

However, Conte wants to mould his Tottenham team in his own vision and has already got to work on that front.

Kulusevski has already formed a strong attacking partnership with Harry Kane and Son Heung-min.

Former Everton striker Richarlison has now joined the ranks too and will be looking to impress.

Bergwijn, meanwhile, will hope to revive his career back in the Netherlands.

In the short-term, the move is a good one as he can get regular minutes and get back into top form ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

Indeed, Bergwijn is competing with the likes of Memphis Depay, Cody Gakpo and Noa Lang for a spot in Louis van Gaal’s team.
