Brian Brobbey says Manchester United is his “dream club” and revealed that Erik ten Hag tried to recruit him this summer.

Ten Hag joined United from Ajax and took both Lisandro Martinez and Antony with him from the Dutch capital.

The Red Devils were also linked with Ajax’s Jurrien Timber and Brobbey was also thought to be close to a switch to Old Trafford.

The 20-year-old striker was handed his Ajax debut by Ten Hag in 2020 before moving to RB Leipzig on a free transfer after his first senior season.

Brobbey returned to Ajax in January and has scored nine goals in eight Eredivisie starts since.

Asked about Ten Hag’s move to United in April, Brobbey said: “I am very happy for him and he really deserves it after everything he has done for Ajax. If only he brings me with him in two years…. no no.. joking joking!”

And the Netherlands U21 internationl has now added further fuel to that Manchester United transfer rumour fire, claiming they are his “dream club” and confirming that Ten Hag wanted to sign him.

Brobbey told ESPN.nl: “Dream club? Manchester United. Erik sent me a message, yes, to congratulate me, and to tell me that he would like to have me at Manchester United.

“But I’m not finished at Ajax yet, I want to show something here first.”

Lisandro Martinez, an Ajax player who did make the switch to Old Trafford, has some work to do to convince Jamie Carragher that he has what it takes to thrive in the English top flight.

Gary Neville asked Carragher: “Have you changed your mind on Martinez, by the way?”

“No,” Carragher responded. “I think he’s a good player. I wouldn’t want a centre-back who was 5ft 9″ in my team. I would not.”

Pressed by Neville as to why Martinez couldn’t thrive, Carragher suggested his colleague was getting “carried away” with the former Ajax defender’s form.

“We’ll see,” Carragher added. “We’ve had four games [of Martinez being in form]. You’re getting carried away. If Odegaard scores the opening goal then you’ll be saying he made a mistake. But for a defender to be 5ft 9” and play, never mind in the Premier League, at any level of football, he’s got to be a good player. Because that is not normal.

“His passing is very good, he looks aggressive. He looks like a leader. He’s not a bad player, but to play at that level of football at 5ft 9″ – I wouldn’t want to play alongside someone who was 5ft 9″ as a centre back.”
