Ajax have reportedly made their first move to sign Steven Bergwijn, with the winger seemingly not figuring in Antonio Conte’s long-term plans at Tottenham.

The winger signed for Spurs in a £26.7m deal in January 2020, moving from PSV Eindhoven on a deal to 2025. However, despite a goalscoring debut in a home win over Manchester City, Bergwijn has failed to command a regular shirt at Spurs.

Indeed, in 83 appearances for Tottenham, the Netherlands forward has just eight goals to his name.

The January signing of Dejan Kulusevski forced him even further down the Tottenham pecking order. With Lucas Moura and Son Heung-min as competitition, Bergwijn often found himself a bench warmer at bench.

Now the free-transfer capture of Ivan Perisic to Tottenham means the writing is very much on the wall for Bergwijn.

Indeed, the 24-year-old is reportedly one of eight players who are available for transfer by Conte this summer.

Bergwijn was the subject of strong interest from Ajax during the January window, though an offer was never tabled.

As it was, reports blamed Daniel Levy for what was deemed his unrealistic demands over the deal.

That said, it seems they are ready to try again for Bergwijn. To that end, De Telegraaf reports that an opening offer from Ajax for the winger has been tabled.

However, Spurs have once again and very rapidly knocked the offer back, forcing Ajax back to the drawing board. The Eredivisie champions are now considering their next move as they look to reach a compromise with Tottenham.

There remains a confidence that a deal can be done, however. To that end, ESPN reports Spurs are seeking £25m for his services.

Man Utd, Steven Bergwijn transfer claims dismissed

Ajax, however, are not the only side reportedly keen on Bergwijn. The winger is also being tracked by AC Milan, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also reportedly keen on his services.

United, now under the leadership of Erik ten Hag, are seemingly keen with the Red Devils looking for additional firepower this summer.

Antony Martial and Edinson Cavani will both reportedly depart, leading to claims Bergwijn is a possible target.

However, Spurs insider John Wenham has dismissed Bergwijn’s chances of a move to Old Trafford. Furthermore, he fully expects the 18-times capped Holland winger to secure his switch to Ajax.

“I have always said he would go to Ajax,” Wenham told Football Insider.

“I have never heard of anyone else being interested in him despite reports to the contrary.

“There was one utterly ridiculous rumour about him signing for Man Utd just because Ten Hag is there.

“To me, it seems like a club signing at Ajax, rather than a manager signing.

“He plays for Holland, he’s very marketable and he will run away with the Eredivisie. He is far too good for that level.”

Steven Bergwijn appeared for Tottenham 25 times in the Premier League this season, though only four of those came as starts.

Indeed, his last Premier League start under Conte came on January 23 in a 2-0 loss at Chelsea.

As such, a move away from north London appears the best solution to all parties. Bergwijn himself clearly needs the move to help kickstart a career that has stalled badly at Tottenham. And with just four goals and one assist to his name, he will unlikely be missed.

Spurs, meanwhile, continue to push for Josko Gvardiol, though RB Leipzig are proving they won’t be pushovers over his sale.
