Tottenham have seen their patience rewarded after agreeing a deal to sell Steven Bergwijn to Ajax for a fee that will smash the Dutch side’s record for arrivals.

The winger, 24, signed in north London for around £26.7m in 2020. Bergwijn struggled to replicate the stellar form he’d shown with PSV Eindhoven, ultimately notching just seven goals and six assists in 60 Premier League matches at Spurs.

Antonio Conte’s arrival on the scene prompted a reshuffle in the forward ranks. Dejan Kulusevski has been an instant hit following his January arrival. Richarlison signed on the dotted line from Everton last week.

Those deals always meant a requisite exit was likely, and per Fabrizio Romano, Bergwijn is the fall guy.

Talk of a move back to the Netherlands to join Ajax had initially surfaced in January.

Dutch sources claimed a fee had been agreed last weekend, but subsequent updates claimed Daniel Levy was searching for a better deal, specifically relating to add-ons and bonus payments.

Regardless, Tottenham have now agreed terms with Ajax over a €30m deal. That roughly equates to £26m and is the figure Spurs chief Fabio Paratici had reportedly demanded from the beginning.

Romano added Bergwijn is scheduled to undergo a medical on Wednesday. If passed, official confirmation of the move could soon follow with a long-standing agreement over personal terms still in place.

Bergwijn transfer good news for Man Utd, Arsenal?

Ajax’s current record transfer fee stands at the £18.8m they paid West Ham to sign Sebastien Haller in 2021.

Bergwijn’s fee will comfortably surpass that mark and the fact they’re spending big could be good news for Arsenal or Manchester United.

Both clubs are heavily linked with Ajax centre-back, Lisandro Martinez. Elsewhere, United are in the mix for Brazilian forward, Antony.

Bergwijn’s arrival may be a signal another exit out of Amsterdam could be around the corner.
