Arsenal's failure to sign Alexander Isak has left Alan Shearer delighted that the striker will remain a Newcastle player this summer.

The Premier League's all-time top scorer has consistently spoken glowingly of the Swedish international and expressed just how important Isak is for Newcastle's plan for success.

Isak bagged a career-high 21 league goals in 30 matches last season and has been a roaring success at St James' Park since joining the club for a club-record fee of £63million.

The goal-scoring ability of the 24-year-old has seen him attract reported interest from Paris Saint-Germain and Arsenal, with the latter having scoured the market for a striker but to no avail, reports the Express.

Mikel Arteta's side have reportedly kept tabs on Sporting CP's Viktor Gyokeres and Brentford's Ivan Toney. Isak was rumoured to be a key target for the north London club, but his £200m price tag, according to The Telegraph, may have put off the Gunners from making a move.

Newcastle's issues regarding Profit and Sustainability rules this summer meant player sales had to be made with fears that they could be hit with a points deduction this season. In order to satisfy the PSR rule book, the Magpies sold both Elliott Anderson and Yankuba Minteh which meant it eased fears of having to sell stars like Isak, Anthony Gordon, and Bruno Guimaraes.

Speaking to football.london, Shearer - who partnered with Guinness ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League season - was one of many Newcastle supporters who were left delighted that Isak would remain at the club this summer. "It was great news when we realised that he wasn't never going to be sold," the BBC pundit said.

"He's a modern day forward if you like, rather than a centre forward. The way he stops and then goes again, it makes it very difficult for defenders. I would have him as an outside bet really of challenging for the Golden Boot this season if he can stay fit."

Isak has already shown his dedication to Newcastle earlier this summer, saying: "Yeah, of course I want to be here in the future. I came here for the project, I absolutely love playing here, I really feel at home. I want to finish this season in a good way for me and the team. I love playing here."

The Magpies' new season kicked off with a bang, nabbing a 1-0 win against Premier League newbies Southampton on Saturday (August 17), all thanks to Joelinton's decisive strike. The victory was made even more impressive considering Newcastle were down to 10 men following Fabian Schar's contentious red card in the 28th minute for an alleged 'headbutt' on Ben Brereton-Diaz.
