Alan Shearer couldn’t resist but take aim at Mark Clattenburg after he called a Liverpool decision wrong during their Champions League tie against Bayer Leverkusen. The Reds were leading 1-0 thanks to Luis Diaz’s fine finish and looked to have added a second when Cody Gakpo headed home Mohamed Salah’s cross.

However, not long after the ball hit the back of the net, the assistant raised his flag for offside. But following the VAR review, the goal was eventually given.

But before the VAR verdict was given, Clattenburg was introduced by commentator Jon Champion to give his view on the decision. He went on to confidently predict that offside was the correct call.

“What a great advantage initially from the foul that the assistant had given,” he said. “A great advantage that allowed Liverpool to continue.

“But what is interesting, what we see from our angle isn’t what the perspective is. I think the Liverpool player is slightly ahead, and therefore I think this will be given as an offside. But that is only my assumption from the quick camera angle that I have.”

After the goal was given, the former Premier League referee remarked: “It is interesting because what you will have is the VAR is checking for the offside, and it has taken a while, and it is very, very tight, but it is the correct call.

“It is interesting because what I can see from the angle when the ball is played is that he is ahead of the ball. It is tight, but they can check with the VAR technology.”

Shearer couldn’t resist poking fun at Clattenburg, saying: “I think what he is trying to say is that my eyes are better than his. What a great goal! What a cross from Salah!”
