Alan Shearer has told Newcastle United what they need in January transfer window amid Pogba warning
Newcastle United's return to form could change the picture of their January transfer needs, according to club legend Alan Shearer. The Magpies are on a three-game winning streak in all competitions, having beaten Chelsea, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest in consecutive games.
The change in results coincided with Eddie Howe tweaking his midfield set-up, with Sean Longstaff and Joe Willock brought back into the engine room and Joelinton played in a more advanced role on the flanks. It means Sandro Tonali started on the bench in both Premier League wins over Arsenal and Forest, although he did come on to make significant contributions - and starred in a central role in the Carabao Cup success over Chelsea.
With Lewis Miley also back from injury, it leaves Howe with healthy options in midfield, and Shearer was keen to play down any links with Paul Pogba, with the former Manchester United and France star close to an agreement with Juventus to cancel his contract.

However, United's record goalscorer feels there is room for squad improvement in attack and in defence, although Sven Botman's return could again mean the club could change focus when the January transfer window opens in just over a month's time.
"Newcastle look back to their old best after the last two performances and I was impressed with the way the team came from behind at Forest," Shearer told Betfair. "When I look through the side, the midfield is looking like it used to, and we know the injuries Newcastle have at the back, but toward the top of the pitch they may need to look for a striker in January.
"That may depend on if Sven Botman will be ready to play the second half of the season, because he's been out with a cruciate injury for what will be seven months by the time he gets back. If though, he's on time and doing well, then perhaps a centre-half signing may not be a priority.
"Paul Pogba looks to be available next year, but that position isn't one that Newcastle need to strengthen in. They spent £55m on Sandro Tonali who is now back in and available, and they have enough in there with Bruno, Sean Longstaff, Joe Willock, Sandro Tonali and Joelinton, so I wouldn't think that's a position or player Newcastle need to look at."
United return to Premier League action against West Ham on Monday, November 25 without the suspended Dan Burn and injured Emil Krafth, with Lloyd Kelly set to step in alongside Fabian Schar in the heart of the defence.
