Alan Shearer told Nottingham Forest transfer argument is 'tedious' as Brennan Johnson point made
Nottingham Forest fans have reminded Alan Shearer that Newcastle United are not the only club forced to sell a promising player in order to meet financial regulations.
Shearer hit out at the Premier League’s Profitability and Sustainability Rules this week, saying he “doesn’t agree” with them. The pundit and former Magpies striker particularly took issue with clubs “being forced to sell their youngsters” in order to raise necessary funds.
Academy graduates count as pure profit on the books, making them vulnerable to being sold as top-flight teams look to avoid falling foul of PSR. Newcastle’s sale of Elliot Anderson to Forest in the summer came about for that very reason.
Magpies manager Eddie Howe has also questioned the “rationale” around the rules and has been clear that the club did not want to sell the midfielder but had little choice. The Reds have been the beneficiaries on this particular occasion, but supporters have pointed out that not quite such a fuss was made when Nigel Doughty Academy product Brennan Johnson was sold to Tottenham Hotspur in the summer of 2023. Below is a look at what Forest fans have said.
trickyred7980: Technically I agree to a point, however he's only interested now because it involves Newcastle. Didn't see many pundits complaining when we had to sell Brennan.
munsterred: Funny how it only makes headlines when one of the ‘bigger’ clubs has to sell someone. No one cared when we were forced to sell Johnno last year
paulwarning: he has a point, Forest had to sell Brennan Johnson for the same reason
psephotus: Typical of TV pundits, Maybe he should take aim at the top 6 big clubs instead of Forest or is it because there is a link to Newcastle?
Forestfaninthevale: Newcastle chose who to sell no one forced them, Forest had to sell a number of good players but clearly made better choices.
Red Hope2: Didn't think Anderson had one of his better games when he came on against his old club. This overused line saying they did not want to sell him is getting a bit tedious. They could have sold us Harvey Barnes for the same price - that would have been a real steal!
thosewerethedays: There loss our gain.
cloughiesgreenshirt: I don't remember Alan saying much, when Forest had points deducted.
Dannt3: Oh funny that , I didn’t see him objecting to them before his team got dragged into it. UNLUCKY….
Shearer had said: “I don’t like the PSR rules anyway. I’ve told you what my feelings are about them.
“I just think it’s a restriction of trade when you can guarantee you’ve got that money and are profitable and sustainable, and you can put a billion quid in to safeguard and ensure that everything is right in the future, then I don’t see why you shouldn’t be allowed to challenge and buy players. And particularly with the way it’s run with clubs being forced to sell their youngsters because that’s more profitable and gives them a better financial gain going forward in the future. I just don’t agree with those rules.
“We know why it was brought in - to safeguard clubs. I just don’t agree with the rules that are there at the minute.”
