‘Alarming’ Benzema injury ‘opens door’ to Ronaldo return to Real Madrid; Chelsea ‘clean their hands’
Cristiano Ronaldo could be on his way back to Real Madrid for six months after Karim Benzema’s injury, according to reports in Spain.
The Portugal international spent most of the summer transfer window trying to engineer a move away from Manchester United after they failed to qualify for the Champions League.
After he realised there were no concrete offers, aside from a proposal from a Saudi Arabian side, he decided to knuckle down at Old Trafford.
However, Erik ten Hag only gave him four Premier League starts and his lack of game time came to a head last month against Tottenham when he refused to come off the bench.
Ronaldo was fined and made to train by himself before eventually apologising and rejoining first-team duties the week after.
But the 37-year-old caused a stir again last week when he gave a controversial interview to Piers Morgan in which he criticised Man Utd, the manager, young players and lots more.
And now that has reportedly left Man Utd considering legal action and a possible termination of his contract with Ten Hag and his team-mates ‘furious’ over his conduct.
That has left Ronaldo looking for another club with Spanish publication Sport claiming that a recent injury to Karim Benzema ‘opens the door to the arrival of a striker at the Bernabéu in January’.
Benzema, who was initially part of Didier Deschamps’ 26-man squad for the World Cup, confirmed on Saturday evening that he was no longer part of the squad after suffering from a thigh injury.
Sport insists that Ronaldo’s representatives have offered him to Real Madrid with the Portuguese striker ‘willing to play only six months’ at the Bernabeu if it sees him secure a transfer.
Real Madrid have begun to ‘look for an attacker due to the alarming physical condition of Benzema’ and Los Blancos could help Ronaldo ‘find accommodation for his salary’.
As expected, Ronaldo ‘will leave Manchester United’ but won’t move to Chelsea after they ‘cleaned their hands’ of him following his disappointing performances this season.
Real Madrid have not previously shown ‘signs’ that they would be interested in Ronaldo’s return to the Bernabeu but ‘Benzema’s injury opens a new scenario’.
Reacting to United’s decision to begin the process of terminating Ronaldo’s contract, former Man Utd right-back Gary Neville wrote on Twitter: “Sad that it’s come to a point where arguably United’s greatest ever talent is likely to be sacked.
“It didn’t need to be like this. A mature conversation a few weeks ago between ‘both parties’ could have secured a smooth exit.”
