Alex Burrows is now a member of the Ottawa Senators and wasn’t acquired to be a rental.

The Vancouver Canucks dealt the 35-year-old forward on Monday after he agreed to waive his no-trade clause to reunite with Senators assistant coach Marc Crawford, who coached Burrows during his rookie season in 2005-06. Jonathan Dahlen, a 19-year-old Swedish forward, heads the other way.

From the Canucks:

“Jonathan is a very skilled player with natural goal scoring instincts,” said General Manager Jim Benning. “He’s had a terrific season playing in Sweden and was a big part of Sweden’s offence at the World Juniors. His offensive upside combined with his willingness to go to difficult areas of the ice will make him a valuable player for our organization moving forward.”

“We would also like to thank Alex, Nancy and their three children for their incredible commitment to this team and community for over a decade,” continued Benning. “Alex is a consummate professional and has been a leader for us throughout his career in Vancouver. We wish him and his family the very best.”

Burrows also appears to have ensured he’ll be in Ottawa beyond this season after reportedly signing a two-year, $5 million extension. He was set to become an unrestricted free agent this summer.

“I want to win and I would like a chance to play in the playoffs,” Burrows said earlier this week with his name out there in trade rumors. Ottawa sits two points behind the Montreal Canadiens for the Atlantic Division lead.

Burrows may not make the Senators a whole lot better, but along with Chris Neil, who’s out a week with a broken finger, they just improved in the Pest/60 department.

Canucks GM Jim Benning did well here, flipping an expiring contract for a young prospect who’s nearly a point per game player in Sweden. For the Senators, Neil is set to become a UFA this summer, which we guess means Pierre Dorion has found his replacement. For two more seasons.
