Trent Alexander-Arnold feels Liverpool should be thought of as one of the best teams in the annals of the Premier League regardless of Sunday’s results.
The Reds have already secured the EFL Cup and the FA Cup – beating Chelsea on penalties in both finals. They are also through to the final of the Champions League and face Spanish giants Real Madrid in Paris on May 28. The Premier League title is set to be decided on Sunday.
Jurgen Klopp’s side will begin the day one point adrift of Manchester City. And two sides from the West Midlands will decide the destiny of the trophy.
The Anfield outfit host Wolves while Pep Guardiola’s table-toppers take on Aston Villa at the Etihad. It has been an amazing fightback by Liverpool as they trailed City by 14 points at one stage.
And Alexander-Arnold believes the side’s achievements in 2021-2022 should be lauded regardless of how things unfold.
“To push the way we have all in competitions this season, it’s got to be for me one of the best team performances over the course of a season in Premier League history,” he told Sky Sports.
“We’ve taken every trophy to the last game so that’s all you can really ask for. It’s been a special achievement, no matter what happens on Sunday.”
Alexander-Arnold hails Liverpool consistency
Liverpool have taken an amazing 47 points from a possible 51 to get right back in the title race. And that has been achieved while they have also been fighting in three cup competitions.
The clash with Bruno Lage’s men will be Liverpool’s 62nd contest of the season. They will then play the maximum number of games possible in a season when facing Los Blancos at the Stade de France.
Alexander-Arnold has played his part and the England full-back is in awe of the way his side have stuck in the title race.
“When there’s seven or eight fixtures to go, you think surely someone’s got to drop a few points,” he added. “We have, but it’s been quite even. You think back to January and we were miles behind them and we’ve fought back, got ourselves into an amazing position.”
City are favourites to clinch the title having won 28 and drawn six of their 37 games this term. But Liverpool keep finding a way to win. And there may be a few twists and turns left before the dust settles on the campaign.
