Alexander-Arnold reveals Liverpool’s ‘biggest problem’ ahead of Man Utd showdown – ‘we’re trying’
Trent Alexander-Arnold has picked out Liverpool’s “biggest problem” ahead of their game against arch-rivals Manchester United this weekend.
Man Utd earned a shock 2-1 victory over Liverpool when the sides met at the start of this season at Old Trafford. Before this game, the Red Devils had been beaten by Brighton and Brentford.
Erik ten Hag’s side have kicked on following their win over Liverpool. They have won the Carabao Cup and they remain in contention for the Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League.
Liverpool meanwhile have declined. They are likely to end this campaign without a trophy after they lifted the Carabao Cup and FA Cup last season.
Jurgen Klopp’s team are six points adrift of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur with a game in hand. It would be a major boost for them if they can beat Man Utd on Sunday afternoon.
Liverpool are coming off a 2-0 win over Wolves in midweek. Before that, they drew 0-0 against Crystal Palace and were hammered by Real Madrid in the first leg of their Champions League last-16 tie.
Alexander-Arnold feels that Liverpool’s “biggest problem” this season has been their “lack of consistency.
“It’s difficult because, as you said, we aren’t really playing too different,” Alexander-Arnold told JOE when asked about Liverpool’s struggles.
“It’s just not clicked at times. We’ve not been able to string together too many good results and there hasn’t been that much consistency over the course of the season. That’s probably the biggest problem, it’s lack of consistency.
“But it’s something we’re trying to pick up on. We’ve got four good results in the league on the bounce now, and it’s something that we want to build on and push towards the end of the season for.”
Paul Merson thinks Marcus Rashford will want to put Alexander-Arnold “under pressure” at Anfield.
“This is how quickly football changes. You’d be surprised if Manchester United got beaten here. How many times have we been able to say that about this game in the last few years? The way Manchester United are playing, they will take the game to Liverpool,” Merson said.
“They are excellent on the counter and their players seem to make the right decisions whenever they break. United will want Liverpool to have a go at them so that they can hit them on the counter. Klopp’s side could play right into United’s hands on Sunday.
“Marcus Rashford will be looking to put Trent Alexander-Arnold under pressure much like Vinicius Junior did in the Champions League a couple of weeks ago. If United beat Liverpool, their confidence will be high and they will keep themselves in the title race for now.”
