The Liverpool squad roared the club on to land Darwin Nunez once they heard of the striker’s transfer rumours, Trent Alexander-Arnold has claimed.
The Reds’ new striker has certainly made an impression on his new team and also his critics since his move. After facing criticism for a glaring pre-season miss against Manchester United, he hit back in style.
Four goals against RB Leipzig in another friendly followed. And Nunez continued to gel with his new team-mates in Thursday’s defeat to RB Salzburg.
Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has a wealth of confidence in his initial £64million investment paying off. Indeed, he said earlier this month that he feels “completely convinced” about Nunez’s potential.
Alexander-Arnold has previously revealed how he is also backing the Uruguay international to settle in brilliantly.
Speaking to Sky Sports in a fresh interview, Alexander-Arnold spoke of how the Liverpool squad got a feeling they have had with previous Reds additions who have proved fantastic signings.
“When we played him [against Benfica], we knew he was a special player,” the England international said.
“He brings goals scores a lot of goals, gets himself in good positions, will work hard and fight for wins – and that’s what we need and what we expect when we bring players in.
“That’s the club mentality, and I think he will slot in.
“Over the years there has been a few signings where, when the club is linked to them, us players get excited and we’re like ‘Yeah, he will work for us’. This was definitely one of them.”
Alexander-Arnold backs progress
Liverpool came the closest any team ever has to a quadruple last season. They won the FA Cup and Carabao Cup before losing the Champions League final and finishing second in the Premier League.
“We nearly made the impossible possible, we took it as far as you can – never crossed the line on two of the trophies but we’re proud of what we’ve done,” Alexander-Arnold said.
“We know we can improve. I’m excited to get back, start up again and get going – I’m sure it will be an exciting season.”
Alexander-Arnold has nevertheless won every club trophy available to him at Liverpool by the age of 23.
Nunez can add Liverpool dimension
There is no doubt Nunez and Liverpool will need time to adapt to each other, but when they gel, expect goals.
The two sides to the debate have emerged in pre-season, in the defeat to Man Utd and the four-goal haul against Leipzig.
And against Salzburg on Thursday, Klopp insisted that Nunez needed much more support from his team-mates.
He is different to any kind of goalscorer Liverpool have had in the Klopp era. But when it all clicks into gear, there is no doubt Liverpool will have an exciting new dimension up top.
