A pundit has sung the praises of Newcastle United’s record signing Alexander Isak after he got on the scoresheet in his debut against Liverpool.

Isak has been linked with plenty of big teams this year, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Chelsea. He didn’t go anywhere in January though and remained at Spanish club Real Sociedad.

Newcastle came in for the striker on August 26 and managed to land him in a club-record deal. According to BBC Sport, it is worth £60million. This is £20m more than the Magpies spent on Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes in previous transfers.

Isak’s work permit came through in time for him to play against Liverpool at Anfield on Wednesday. And he got off to a great start, putting Newcastle 1-0 up with an emphatic strike in the 38th minute.

Isak also found the net in the second half, this time with a composed finish. But the goal was ruled out for an incredibly close offside.

Newcastle lost the match 2-1 after an equaliser from Roberto Firmino and a dramatic late winner from Fabio Carvalho.

It was a disappointing result for Eddie Howe’s side, but the display of Isak showed just how deadly Newcastle could end up being with him in the starting eleven.

Football Insider pundit Noel Whelan thinks the Swede was ‘fantastic’ against Liverpool and has now backed him to follow in the footsteps of Allan Saint-Maximin by becoming a ‘fan favourite’ at St James’ Park.

Pundit lauds Alexander Isak after Anfield goal

“He looked fantastic,” Whelan said during a recent interview. “He looked like he’d been in the Premier League for five years.

“The use of his pace, he’s a strong lad, great on the ball, aerial ability – and the finishes for the two goals. They were the finishes of a high-quality centre-forward.

“He only needed those two chances to put the ball in the back of the net, and he looks like someone who is going to be really handy.

“As long as he stays fit and in that sort of form, he’s going to be a massive player for Newcastle.

“He can be a huge fan favourite alongside Saint-Maximin.”

Isak certainly has the look of a top Prem striker. He is quick, possesses good strength and most importantly a keen eye for goal.

It’s no surprise top clubs such as Manchester United and Arsenal were looking into the possibility of capturing him.

But it is Newcastle and Howe who will benefit from having Isak over the next few years. And if his performance against Liverpool is anything to go by, he will score plenty of goals.

The 22-year-old will be hoping to get amongst the goals again when Newcastle play Crystal Palace on Saturday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Martin Dubravka has spoken as a Man Utd player for the first time after joining them from Newcastle.
