Liverpool could soon have another key component of its leadership group, according to Alisson Becker, with Argentine midfielder Alexis Mac Allister having a growing role within Arne Slot's roster.

A World Cup winner before he arrived at Anfield from Brighton for $47m (£35m/€42m), Mac Allister has a huge amount of experience. He is a key man for his national team and has dovetailed nicely with Lionel Messi at international level. Since arriving at Liverpool, the 25-year-old has established himself as a crucial player and was in the conversation for being the best of the lot in his debut campaign.

"I am committed to this club 100 per cent, and I think that involves being part of this leadership group," Alisson told the BBC this week. "Me, Virgil, Robbo, Trent, Mo Macca [Mac Allister] now is someone that is bringing his experience as well. He is young, but he has achieved so many things already, and that brings him to a standard of good leadership."

Liverpool needs to resolve the futures of Virgil van Dijk, Mohamed Salah and Trent Alexander-Arnold, who are all out of contract next summer as things stand. But Alisson has hinted that he isn't going anywhere.

Even so, new leaders will need to emerge as the current group gets older. Mac Allister, just entering his prime years as a soccer player and already having shown himself to have world-class potential, is an ideal candidate.

"[Slot is] doing an amazing job," Mac Allister told Sky Sports last week. "You can see how much he knows about football. Tactically, he is very good and he tries to be [on top of] every detail.

"We are very happy with Arne and we are working very hard. We have many games coming up and we have to show what we can do. Hopefully it is going to be a good time for Arne."

Liverpool.com says: Mac Allister is an underrated presence in the Liverpool midfield. He cost a third of what Arsenal paid for Declan Rice but the two are comparable in terms of quality.
