Algeria 0-1 Equatorial Guinea LIVE! AFCON 2022 result, match stream and latest updates today

Algeria vs Equatorial Guinea LIVE!

After a frustrating draw with Sierra Leone in their opening game, Algeria will be looking to spark their Africa Cup of Nations campaign into life against Equatorial Guinea.

Reigning AFCON champions Algeria are among the favourites to defend their crowd in Cameroon, but Riyad Mahrez and his team were held to a 0-0 draw by Sierra Leone first up.

That result did see Algeria extend their unbeaten streak to 35 games, which is within two games of the world record held by Italy.

They will be in search of three points this time around but they could be in for another tricky assignment at the Japoma Stadium in Douala.

Equatorial Guinea were beaten 1-0 by Ivory Coast in their opening game but they showed enough to suggest Algeria could be in for another tricky assignment.

With kick-off at 7pm BST, follow all the action with Malik Ouzia...

FT: Algeria 0-1 Equatorial Guinea

20:52 , Malik Ouzia

Incredible. The shock of the tournament so far.

20:48 , Malik Ouzia

90+1 mins: We’re playing five minutes of extra-time...

20:44 , Malik Ouzia

86 mins: How has this not gone in?

Atal fires across goal and Obono attempts to clear. Any sort of decent connection and he’s scoring an own goal but he slices it and it somehow flies away to safety.

20:41 , Malik Ouzia

84 mins: Goal disallowed!

Belaili thinks he’s levelled it up with a superb strike but he’s gone too early and for the second time in the match the linesman’s flag denies Algeria.

20:40 , Malik Ouzia

82 mins: Massive chance. Belaili nods in behind for Slimani, who just needs a decent strike but swivels on it and completely mis-kicks.

20:34 , Malik Ouzia

77 mins: Djamel Belmadi has reacted by sending Yacine Brahimi into the mix and, naturally, there’s suddenly a real urgency about Algeria’s play.

Their 35-match unbeaten streak is in real danger here.

GOAL! Algeria 0-1 Equatorial Guinea | Esteban Obono 70'

20:28 , Malik Ouzia

Incredible!

Algeria don’t deal with a near post flick and Obono is the man stealing in round the back post to slide home!

20:25 , Malik Ouzia

68 mins: This time Mahrez tricks them, running over the ball and backheeling for Belaili to strike and strike it well he does, through a gap in the wall and just wide via a tiny deflection.

20:24 , Malik Ouzia

67 mins: Algeria have another free-kick right on the edge of the box after substitute Boulaya is upended. Mahrez put one of these well over the bar at the end of the first half. Can he do any better here?

20:20 , Malik Ouzia

63 mins: Ismael Bennacer’s been very quiet until now on his return to the side but in the last five minutes or so he has just started to pop up in a few decent positions.

20:15 , Malik Ouzia

57 mins: Great clearance!

It’s a brilliant delivery from the left from Bensebaini and it finds Belaili at the back post. To be honest, he should do better but he’s gotten ahead of the ball and rather miscues his header back across goal, where it is hooked over his own bar by Coco.

20:10 , Malik Ouzia

53 mins: Looks like Algeria will also be making a change here because Benlarmi’s got a problem. A bit of stretching doesn’t resolve the problem and Mehdi Tahrat is about to come on in his place.

20:08 , Malik Ouzia

50 mins: Big opening. Salvador nicks it off Belaili in midfield and feeds the substitute Nlavo. He does the first bit right in opening out to target the far corner but he gets the finish wrong and steers it straight at M’Bohli.

20:06 , Malik Ouzia

49 mins: Much the same pattern at the start of this second half: plenty of the referee’s whistle, not much in the way of decent football.

KICK-OFF!

20:02 , Malik Ouzia

We are back underway, with a change at the break for Equatorial Guinea. Luis Nlavo is on in place of Oscar Siafa up front.

20:00 , Malik Ouzia

The teams are just making their way back out. This is a massive 45 minutes for the holders, who will not want to go into that game against Ivory Coast needing to win to go through.

19:52 , Malik Ouzia

Algeria have got plenty of attacking options on the bench, of course. Yacine Brahimi and Islam Slimani both started the first game, while Said Benrahma came on late in that game, too.

HT: Algeria 0-0 Equatorial Guinea

19:47 , Malik Ouzia

A very scrappy first half.

19:46 , Malik Ouzia

45+1 mins: Spooned over the bar by Mahrez - probably too close to get it up and down.

19:45 , Malik Ouzia

44 mins: Algeria’s turn to get a soft free-kick as Bounedjah bends his run to stay onside and collides with Coco before hitting the deck. The referee gives it right on the edge of the box and then flashes a couple more yellow cards about for good measure.

19:42 , Malik Ouzia

42 mins: Cracking work from Atal, who somehow keeps it in play on the right with his chest and then manages to beat his marker to it as well. He’s into the box and takes aim at the far corner but it’s well blocked.

19:39 , Malik Ouzia

39 mins: Oof. This is a superb strike from Salvador - who you just cannot keep out of the action - and it whistles past the post from 25 yards with M’Bohli well beaten.

19:37 , Malik Ouzia

36 mins: Almost brilliant!

Everyone’s expecting a delivery in from the free-kick on the right but Pablo Ganet tries to catch M’Bohli out at the near-post and the ‘keeper has to scramble across to keep it out.

19:32 , Malik Ouzia

32 mins: Djamel Belmadi is absolutely furious with the officiating here. There’ve been a couple of hefty challenges going unpunished in the last few minutes and the Algeria coach wants to see the yellow card out.

19:28 , Malik Ouzia

28 mins: Salvador is not making many friends on the Algerian team here. He goes down about five seconds after supposedly being fouled by Bensebaini but again the referee goes for it and awards a free-kick.

GOAL DISALLOWED!

19:24 , Malik Ouzia

Oh, it’z lazy from Riyad Mahrez!

The Man City man has all the time in the world to get back onside but loiters just off. His header from Bensebaini’s cross is actually well-saved anyway but the ball falls to Bounedjah, who taps in what he thinks is the opener.

But it’s not to be - the flag is rightly raised.

19:22 , Malik Ouzia

22 mins: Massive chance, superb goalkeeping.

It’s brilliant from Mahrez, who stands his man up with a stepover and breezes past him before pulling back for Belaili.

He pulls the trigger from the edge of the box but Jesús Owono is equal to it and gets up to claw away the rebound, too.

19:17 , Malik Ouzia

16 mins: Finally, after a first 15 minutes or so in which we had more fouls than passes, Algeria have slipped into a bit of a rhythm. Mahrez is growing in influence and he’s earned a corner.

19:12 , Malik Ouzia

10 mins: This really has been the scrappiest of starts. Basilio Ndong becomes the third player booked already as he cynically halts the run of Belaili.

19:10 , Malik Ouzia

8 mins: And again!

It’s a very similar situation as Bensebaini and Salvador chase a ball into the channel and the Equatorial Guinea man suddenly hits the deck clutching his face.

Bensebaini is next into the book but actually he looks a bit unlucky - not much at all in that, Salvador’s got him booked.

19:06 , Malik Ouzia

3 mins: What on Earth is he thinking?

Bounedjah turns and rams straight into Saul Coco, looking in the opposite direction to the ball. The Equitiorial Guinea players are furious, signalling to the referee that there’s an elbow involved but the man in the middle says he’s led with his shoulder and it’s only a yellow card. Still, a bizarre thing to do.

KICK-OFF!

19:01 , Malik Ouzia

We are up and running...

18:57 , Malik Ouzia

We’ve not been blessed with big crowds at this tournament so far, mainly because of Covid vaccination requirements, but it looks a decent turnout and a fizzing atmosphere tonight.

18:53 , Malik Ouzia

Right then, the teams will soon be on their way out at the Japoma Stadium. A massive game coming up in which the defending champions really need to show an improved performance.

18:37 , Malik Ouzia

Perhaps the most significant bit of news from that Algeria lineup is that AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer comes straight back into the side.

Bennacer was suspended for the opening game as a result of the number of yellow cards he racked up in qualifying and the Algerians really lacked control in the middle of the park in his absence, particularly during the first half against Sierra Leone.

18:23 , Malik Ouzia

The other game in this group has finished and it turned into an absolute thriller, with Sierra Leone snatching a 2-2 draw in stoppage time after Ivory Coast looked to have won it through Arsenal winger Nicolas Pepe.

That really does have a significant impact on the shape of this group, with Algeria now having chance to move level on points with Ivory Coast at the top, while Sierra Leone will have a huge opportunity to qualify if they beat Equatorial Guinea in their final game.

Equatorial Guinea team news

In their opener...

17:43 , Malik Ouzia

As for Equatorial Guinea, they faced Ivory Coast in a tough opener but it took a cracking goal from Max Gradel to get the better of them.

In their opener...

17:34 , Malik Ouzia

It wasn’t for lack of chances, but Algeria were frustrated in their opener as they were held to a goalless draw by Sierra Leone in their opening group game earlier this week.

Standard Sport prediction

17:20 , Malik Ouzia

With a heavyweight clash against Ivory Coast to come in their final group game, Algeria can ill-afford any further slip ups and having had a game to warm into the tournament, will be expecting a miuch-improved display.

Algeria to win 2-0.

Algeria team news

17:07 , Malik Ouzia

Djamel Belmadi could make several changes to his side after their disappointing display against Sierra Leone.

AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer could return after missing the opener through suspension, while West Ham’s Said Benrahma is another option, though he missed an excellent chance after coming off the bench.
