Alistair Overeem certainly gave himself some leverage in his contract negotiations following UFC on FOX 17.

Overeem earned a technical knockout of former UFC heavyweight champion Junior dos Santos in the second round of their co-main event. The fight was the last on Overeem’s contract with the UFC, and, if he re-ups with the organization, the win puts him in a good position for title contention.

It’s something he said he’s looking forward to.

“When my entire focus is on training and just preparing … I just do 100-percent that and nothing else,” Overeem said at the post-fight interview. “This is a new reality. I’m going to have to look at it, what’s going on, and I’m actually looking forward to it.”

When Overeem came to the UFC from Strikeforce in 2011, he came with a ton of hype and many hoped he would meet then-champion dos Santos.

Fast forward to 2015 and the match comes to fruition, but with no belt on the line. The results, however, saw “The Reem” winning in finishing fashion.

With a win over a former titleholder now in his back pocket, Overeem is on a three-fight winning streak with high hopes for a shot at the UFC belt.

“I do think that a title shot is there,” he said. “I’m very confident with the team and people I have around me, if we could pull that off. Let’s negotiate and see what happens.”

And while negotiations will soon begin, training doesn’t appear to be slowing down anytime soon.

“I’m not done yet,” he said. “I want to continue, keep going, so I’m already going to head back into camp in January. I’m going to be ready for what’s going to be next.”
