Alpine skiing-Hirscher wins record sixth successive overall title

March 4 (Reuters) - Austria's Marcel Hirscher took an unprecedented sixth successive men's Alpine skiing World Cup overall title on Saturday after winning the penultimate giant slalom of the season in Kranjska Gora, Slovenia. The 28-year-old's feat beat the previous best of five titles he had held jointly with Luxembourg's Austrian-born all-rounder Marc Girardelli. Girardelli took nine years to win his five overall titles, however, taking them in 1985, 1986, 1989, 1991 and 1993 when Switzerland's Pirmin Zurbriggen and Paul Accola were among his leading rivals. Austrian Annemarie Moser-Proell won six overall women's titles but they were not consecutive, coming between 1971 and 1979. "If I'm telling the truth, maybe it is a little too much for me right now," said an emotional Hirscher, who won gold in giant slalom and slalom at last month's world championships in St. Moritz. Hirscher, who won Saturday's race 0.46 seconds ahead of Norway's Leif Kristian Haugen with Sweden's Matts Olsson third, also clinched the giant slalom title two weeks before the season-ending World Cup finals in Aspen, Colorado. "It was not easy and I am very glad to be through with it. And I am super happy with the giant slalom globe. It is a huge relief," added the Austrian, who now has seven individual crystal globes (four giant slalom, three slalom) in addition to his overall crowns, and 44 World Cup wins. Hirscher has an unassailable lead of 504 points over Norwegian Kjetil Jansrud in the overall standings with five races -- and a maximum 500 points -- remaining. In the giant slalom standings, he leads France's Alexis Pinturault -- who did not finish his first run on Saturday -- by 194 points with one race left. The Austrian can add the slalom World Cup title to his resume on Sunday. (Reporting by Alan Baldwin in London, editing by Pritha Sarkar)
