Alpine stitch will be your new favourite for crocheting jumpers this winter
If you're looking for a new crochet stitch to master, alpine stitch is a great one to try.
Crocheted alpine stitch is gorgeously textured, perfect to use when making crochet jumpers and scarves to keep you cosy through the winter.
It's a surprisingly easy stitch to master once you know how to crochet – the basic pattern of two rows is repeated until you reach your desired length.
If you'd like to crochet alpine stitch, look no further than my simple step-by-step video guide, which takes you through every stage of working alpine stitch. I love using alpine stitch to work textured pocket detail onto a crochet jumper or cardigan – it's perfect for winter projects.
We've used Prima DK yarn and a Prima crochet hook from The Works for our alpine stitch. Our yarn is robust and easy to stitch with, and comes in a huge range of colours, making it perfect for your crochet.

How to do crochet alpine stitch
Step 1
Chain a multiple of 2 plus 1, for example 31 stitches.
Step 2
Work a row of double crochet.
Step 3
Chain 1 and work another row of double crochet.
Step 4
Chain 2 and turn your work.
Step 5
Work one front post treble crochet into the next stitch from the base of the chain. To do this, instead of treble crocheting into the top of the stitch as normal, work the stitch into the post of the stitch. Make sure you keep the new front post treble crochet stitch nice and loose.
Step 6
Miss a stitch, then work a normal 1 treble crochet stitch into the next stitch.
Step 7
Work another front post treble crochet into the next stitch.
Step 8
Repeat this pattern across the rest of the row: 1 treble crochet, 1 front post treble crochet.
Step 9
Chain one and turn your work.
Step 10
Work a row of double crochet.
Step 11
Chain 2 and turn your work.

Repeat this pattern for the rest of the row.
Step 15
Repeat this pattern for your desired length: 1 row of alternating front post treble and treble crochet, followed by one row of double crochet.
