Arsenal have reportedly opened talks with LOSC Lille over the potential transfer of Belgian midfielder Amadou Onana.

Arsenal have been heavily linked with a move for the 20-year-old as they bid to improve their defence. Having joined  Lille from Hamburg last year, Onana has received widespread attention through his impressive performances. Now, he could be on the move once again with Arsenal looking to complete the transfer soon.

According to RMC Sport, Mikel Arteta’s side have contacted the French outfit as they look to arrange a deal.

But the transfer is far from completed just yet. The tweet also suggests that London rivals West Ham United are also interested in a deal.

While the Hammers have not contacted Lille, they are still said to be serious about completing a transfer.

The 20-year-old impressed in his first season in Ligue 1. He made 32 appearances in the division as his side finished 10th in the table.

Recognised for his tall stature and dominant presence on the pitch, he is a nuisance for opposition players. And as he turns 21 next month, there is still plenty of time for him to further improve his game.

He joined from Hamburg for a fee of £6m. However, it is unclear what Lille value him at now, or if they would even be willing to listen to offers.

Should Onana complete the transfer to Arsenal, he could move straight into the starting line-up.

Despite his young age, Onana has plenty of experience and has proved he can perform consistently throughout a season.

Arsenal struggled with squad depth last season, especially in the midfielder compartment. Thomas Partey missed 14 league games through injury, and he was noticeably missed in those fixtures.

Adding a new defensive-minded midfielder would not only add depth, but also improve competition for a place in the starting 11. With the signing pf Fabio Vieira, it is also clear Arsenal are interested in young talent.

Alternatively, a switch to West Ham could provide the same effect. Tomas Soucek has been linked with a move away from the London Stadium, with Aston Villa potential suitors.

Soucek made 35 appearances for West Ham in the league last season. If he was to leave, the club would need to find a replacement, and Onana could be that man.
