Amanda Nunes Locked on Ronda Rousey for First UFC Title Defense

While every other UFC champion is either booked – most of them on the UFC 205: Alvarez vs. McGregor fight card set for New York City – or having recently fought, UFC women's bantamweight champion Amanda Nunes has been sitting idly by, awaiting her next assignment.

Nunes is part of a division that has become a revolving door since Holly Holm knocked out Ronda Rousey at UFC 193 in November of last year. Miesha Tate then took the belt from Holm, and Nunes then took it from her. Nunes dismantled Tate, rocking her with punches before submitting her a little over three minutes into their fight.

That was on July 9. Nunes hasn't set foot in the Octagon since, but she does have a target in mind for her return, both a date and, more specifically, an opponent.

“I do not know yet when I come to fight. I think the end of the year is likely, perhaps in the last event of the year (UFC 207),” Nunes told Combate.com. “I am waiting. But I hope it's against Ronda, of course.”

Although there have been much speculation centered around UFC 207, which is slated for a special Friday event on Dec. 30 in Las Vegas, nothing has been settled, not even behind the scenes, according to Nunes.

“I do not know anything yet, I'm just waiting for the call.”

While several challengers have called her out, Nunes isn't taking the bait. With talk centered on Rousey likely returning at the end of this year or early next, Nunes is willing to wait for the fight that she wants, and she wants Rousey.

“Juliana Peña said I'm running; Valentina Shevchenko said I'm running, too. Now (Shevchenko) is talking about Juliana Peña running. I do not like little game,” said Nunes.

“If you ask me who I want to fight, I'll say I want to fight Ronda. I'm not running from anyone. I am the champion and I can choose who I must face. I will choose what is best for me and Round would be a main event, so it has to be with her.”

There has been little comment from Rousey's side of the fight, but if she returns soon, as rumored, she is guaranteed a shot at the belt. Even though Rousey's nemesis, Cris “Cyborg” Justino, has been active in the Octagon this year, UFC president Dana White has said that, while Rousey wants to fight Cyborg, she will get a crack at the belt upon her return, no matter who holds it.
