Manchester City new boy Claudio Echeverri reinforced his talent with a star-showing for Argentina as they thrashed Brazil 6-0 in the Under-20 South American Championship.

Echeverri has been given dispensation by City to play in the tournament and will link up with the Blues when it concludes next month. He will hope to do so with a winner's medal after playing a starring role in the group opener.

The 18-year-old scored twice in a commanding display with Argentina three up inside 11 minutes. He added his second after the break as Brazil were well beaten.

“We did an amazing job, we were ready for this,” Echeverri said. “We are always motivated to play against Brazil. We will not relax, we need to keep improving.”

The first three teams in each group will advance to a six-team round robin stage while the top four teams overall will book a spot in the Under-20 World Cup.

Echeverri is highly rated and City, who signed him 12 months ago before allowing him to remain at former club River Plate, had seen enough of the midfielder to want to bring him into the first team fold upon arrival in Manchester.

Echeverri competed in the Olympics last year and will link up with City once he is finished with his latest international duties. While he could still feature for Guardiola's side this season, the decision to let him play in this tournament is a reminder that he is still viewed as a future prospect by the club.
