Amazon Prime Day 2020: everything we know about the date and deals to expect

After months of speculation, Amazon’s annual sale for its Prime members will take place this year on October 13-14.

Typically set in July, this year the sale was postponed as the online shopping giant concentrated its efforts on delivering essentials to customers in lockdown.

The retailer is promising to make up for it though and has revealed that the two-day extravaganza will feature more than one million deals.

Here’s everything else you need to know about Amazon Prime Day 2020.

What is Amazon Prime Day?

While the very first Prime day in 2015 was a 24-hour event, recent years have seen more discounts and offers spread over two whole days to give customers even more opportunities to bag incredible products at a fraction of the cost.

When is Amazon Prime Day 2020?

As we mentioned, we don't have the exact dates yet, but the rumour mill is pointing to October.

This would make sense, as a sale next month would put it ahead of annual Black Friday sales which take place on November 27, after the US’s Thanksgiving holiday.

Which brands will be on sale on Amazon Prime Day?

Last year, the retail giant sold a staggering 175 million products as customers with Prime membership took advantage of the huge savings over tech, home, food & drink, beauty, baby and Amazon devices, plus many more.

Brands include the likes of Braun, Oral-B, Ray-Ban, Nikon, Phillips, Beats, Marshall and loads more premium names.

Amazon Prime Day is the perfect time to pick up a big ticket item for less (hello new TV or mattress), secure Christmas and birthday gifts early, or just treat yo'self for a fraction of the RRP.

What kind of deals are on Amazon Prime Day?

If last year is anything to go by, we’ll see two types of discounts available in 2020’s sale: Lightning Deals and Deals of the Day.

As the name suggests, Lightning Deals will be flash sales, running for a short, fixed period with a limited number of products available. You need to be quick to grab them, because once they’re gone, they’re gone.

Meanwhile, Deals of the Day is slightly less of a mad scramble. They spotlight deals on a specific product that are good for the whole day.

All this, including unlimited delivery, with more products available for next-day or in some cases, same-day delivery.

As well as products, members should also be able to nab deals, offers and exclusive content from Amazon Music, Prime Video and Twitch Prime.

Are there any deals on right now?

Yes! Amazon has a Daily Deals page which run for 24 hours. Here's where you'll find deals on a host of categories, from Amazon devices like Kindle, Echo and Alexa to furniture, kitchen tools, beauty and tech. There's also a Deals Under £15 section which should delight bargain-hunters. But, as good as these deals are, they're not a patch on the offers available during Amazon Prime Day.

Which brings us neatly to the next, crucial section...

Do you need an Amazon Prime account to take part?

Yes. The sale is exclusively for Prime members so you need to be signed up if you want to bag all the bargains in Amazon’s annual sale. As well as next-day delivery on thousands of products, Amazon Prime membership also opens up a world of video, books and music streaming services.

Students can get in on the action with Amazon Student, which costs £3.99 a month, and comes with a whole raft of discounts and offers for those studying.

How much does Amazon Prime membership cost?

You can either pay £7.99 a month or pay a £79 annual fee.

If you haven’t signed up yet and you’re hesitating, you can try a free 30-day trial before the sale and see how you like it.
