The infection developed in his broken left forearm after a second plate was inserted to aid the healing process. Gronkowski is currently receiving antibiotic treatment at Massachusetts General Hospital.
Gronkowski initially suffered a broken arm in a Nov. 18 in a game against the Indianapolis Colts. He returned late in the regular season and then broke the arm again in the Patriots' playoff loss to the Baltimore Colts in January.
After the second break, a new plate was surgically inserted. A third surgery might be needed to eliminate the infection and then a fourth surgery would be done to insert a new plate.
A fourth surgery could extend the healing process, which takes 10 weeks, up to the start of the regular season.
Cornerback Darrelle Revis not only is required by the New York Jets to attend their voluntary workouts that start April 15 in New Jersey, but he has a financial incentive to be there.
His contract includes $3 million in bonuses linked to his participation in offseason workouts, ESPN New York reported.
According to the report, Revis does not want to show up for the workouts.
The Seattle Seahawks will be holding auditions this week for their backup quarterback job. Or so it seems.
The Seahawks are expected to bring in Matt Leinart, Brady Quinn, Seneca Wallace and Tyler Thigpen for a two-day workout and visit starting on Monday, USA Today reported.
Cornerback Antoine Winfield also is scheduled to visit the Seattle Seahawks this week, NFL.com reported.
Winfield also is considering the Washington Redskins and a return to the Minnesota Vikings, who released Winfield last month.
