It’s not often a player can make history just by taking the ice, but that’s what Andrew Cogliano of the Anaheim Ducks did on Tuesday night in Montreal.

Cogliano is playing in his 738th straight game, the fifth longest streak in NHL history. He passed St. Louis Blues defenseman Jay Bouwmeester’s streak of 737 games, which was set from March 2004 through Nov. 2014. Cogliano’s consecutive games streak is the longest in the NHL in 23 years.

To celebrate, he scored the Ducks’ first goal:

The streak began on Oct. 4, 2007, his NHL debut for the Edmonton Oilers. He hasn’t missed a game since, playing 328 games for the Oil before moving over to the Anaheim Ducks, where he’s played 410 games since 2011.

Congrats to Cogliano. Hockey is an inherently injurious game, whether it’s the hitting or the wear-and-tear or a random puck or stick to the face. Combine that with his ability to stay in the lineup without a healthy scratch for nine years, and it’s an achievement worth celebrating.

Cogliano can pass Craig Ramsey (776) this season for No. 4 all-time. After that, it’s Steve Larmer (884), Garry Unger (914) and the immortal Doug Jarvis, who played 964 straight games from 1975-1987. That’s a streak that spanned all four “JAWS” movies!
