Andrew Shaw retires from NHL after string of concussions
"For the first time in my life, I'm going to listen."
Two-time Stanley Cup champion Andrew Shaw, 29, has bid farewell to the game — and to the Chicago Blackhawks, and their fans — after sharing an emotional retirement video Monday morning. The gritty forward explained that medical professionals have advised him to walk away from the NHL following his latest in a string of concussions suffered throughout his career.

A talented utility player and a handful, always, for the opposition, Shaw was a key factor at moments in the Chicago dynasty years. He often shared the ice with Patrick Kane or Jonathan Toews as a swing forward who moved up and down Joel Quenneville's highly-talented roster in the mid 2010s as a means to inject energy and physicality.
Shaw eclipsed 30 points twice in Chicago, but his best moments seemed to come in his five postseason runs with the organization. Shaw had 16 goals and 35 points in 67 playoff games for the Blackhawks, who won two of the three Stanley Cups awarded between 2013 and 2015.

Eventually, Shaw was one of many cap casualties for the Blackhawks and was traded to the Montreal Canadiens. He actually had his most productive regular season in 2018-19 for head coach Claude Julien, scoring 47 points, but the same team success wouldn't follow.
He was traded back to Chicago after three seasons in Montreal, but has been mostly sidelined since. Shaw was 14 months between games in his return to the organization following another head injury, and only appeared in 40 games in parts of two seasons.
His latest concussion was suffered in early February.
ESPN's Emily Kaplan caught up with Shaw after the decision was made. Shaw suggested to her that he's stepping away while his health remains in tact, not because he's suffering from the effects of multiple head injuries.
"I want people to know that I'm OK. I'm in a good place. But I'm going to miss it, I'm going to miss it like crazy still."
Shaw is the second member of the dynasty Blackhawks to enter early retirement this season. Defenceman Brent Seabrook made the same decision due to a back injury.
