Andrey Rublev says his frustrations and emotions got the better of him after failing to reach a Grand Slam semi-final yet again.
The seventh seed started his quarter-final clash against Marin Cilic as the favourite, but it was the veteran Croatian who came out on top with a 5-7, 6-3, 6-4, 3-6, 7-6 (7-2) victory.
It was a tight contest as there was only one break of serve in each of the first four sets while Rublev saved a match point on his own serve in game 10 of the decider.
However, he was blown away by the former US Open champion the deciding tie-breaker.
It was the fifth time in his career that he failed to win a quarter-final match at a major.
“After the first set I was relaxed and straightaway when I started to think too much and when things weren’t going my way, I started to show frustration,” Rublev said.
When asked why he has struggled to make it to the semi-finals of majors, the Russian replied: “Everything mental. I couldn’t manage, all the time I couldn’t manage the emotions.
“And now it was the closest ever time that I was able to go through to be in semi-finals. Then again, the same thing, I didn’t manage the emotions.
“I don’t know if I did it better as compared to other matches. At least I did a better score and I was closer than other matches, but still, is the same thing.”
