Andrey Rublev was incredulous at being asked about his diet during the ATP Finals.
Rublev was asked to comment on rumours that he had been eating only shrimp and chugging cappuccinos.
“I just wanna make sure this is right, the key to your success this week, your diet has been cappuccinos and shrimp,” Rublev was asked during his post-match interview on Tennis Channel following a win over Stefanos Tsitsipas.
Rublev appeared slightly amused but made it clear that stories supposedly leaked by the venue restaurant is not a good look for the ATP.
“This is a bulls*** on another level,” Rublev responded.
“[The] ATP have to do something because it’s unacceptable.”
Andrey Rublev wouldn’t be the only tennis player to drink coffee pre-match and though he admits that his diet isn’t what it could be, he slammed stories speculating about his eating habits.
“I mean I’m like a normal person, I’m drinking cappuccinos, but the things that they were writing there is another level.
“And I think ATP should do something because it cannot happen in the restaurant in a tennis tournament,” he laughed.
“My diet for sure is not good but it’s not that bad that they show there.”
Rublev said that he had enjoyed his week in Turin with the pressure off him.
“I guess I need to be more like this,” he said of the feeling he took into the tournament after being drawn against three former champions.
“When I’m too serious and I want it too much then fire and explosion on the court is coming.”
Rublev also felt he did well to keep his emotions in check during his match against Tsitsipas.
“I didn’t give up. I kept fighting and playing,” Rublev said.
“I lost my emotions a bit when I lost a stupid game at 40/0 in the first set. I let my emotions go. But then I just kept fighting and playing and you will have chances. I thought I would have chances if I just gave my best. I managed to turn the match around and I am happy to be in the semis.”
Rublev is looking forward to facing Casper Ruud for a place in the ATP Finals championship match.
“I am really looking forward [to the match] because Casper is such a nice person on and off the court,” Rublev said.
“He is a great player, great fighter. He has achieved so many good things this season, so it is going to be a really good challenge for me. I hope I will do my best and I will see what happens.”
