Andy Murray vs Roberto Bautista Agut - LIVE: Murray out of Australian Open after four-set defeat

Andy Murray threatened another miracle on Margaret Court Arena but fell to a four-set defeat against Roberto Bautista Agut in the third round of the Australian Open. The Scot was back at the scene of his late-night heroics against Thanasi Kokkinakis, having done his best to recover from the five-hour, 45-minute epic in which he came back from two sets down to claim victory at 4.05am.

Coupled with a near five-hour first-round win against Matteo Berrettini, Murray had spent 10 hours and 34 minutes on court just making it through to the last 32. To begin with it appeared he would offer little resistance but he willed himself into the match and improbably took the second set before Spaniard Bautista Agut claimed a 6-1 6-7 (7) 6-3 6-4 victory after three hours and 29 minutes.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic continued to defy a hamstring injury as a straight-sets victory over Grigor Dimitrov sent him into the fourth round. The title favourite took another timeout after falling to the floor at the side of the court at the end of the first set but, despite continuing to limp and looking uncomfortable at times, clinched a 7-6 (7) 6-3 6-4 victory.

Earlier, Dan Evans was overpowered by fifth seed Andrey Rublev in a straight-sets defeat. The Russian crunched 60 winners compared with only 22 unforced errors in a quality display to win 6-4 6-2 6-3 and leave Murray as the only British singles player remaining ahead of his meeting with Bautista Agut. Andy Murray denied latest Australian Open miracle after four-set defeat to Roberto Bautista Agut

12:24 , Jamie Braidwood

Andy Murray could barely walk, as the exertions of two marathon matches and over 10 hours on court were written across his face and in every stiff, painful movement. As Roberto Bautista Agut raced to a 6-1 opening set in 29 minutes there seemed to be a simple answer to the question of how much else Murray had to give, after the 35-year-old came through the longest match of his career and finished at 4am against Thanasi Kokkinakis in the second round.

It turned out it was only the start of the third act of Murray’s stunning exploits at the Australian Open, even though it would be a final one. The odds were always going to be stacked against Murray but an exhausted body and mind, drained further by a lack of sleep, somehow fought on with whatever strength remained. As his aching joints loosened, during the points if not in between them, Murray battled to win an 87-minute second set after coming from 6-4 down in the tiebreak to spark hope of another unbelievable recovery.

But as Bautista Agut responded to defeat Murray in four fiercely compelling sets, it proved to be his final act of resistance at this Australian Open. It took an exhausted Murray into over 14 hours on court this week and in the end, it was time, rather than age, that caught up with the three-time grand slam champion.

Andy Murray denied latest Australian Open miracle after Roberto Bautista Agut defeat

Australian Open 2023: Reaction from Andy Murray

16:01 , Jamie Braidwood

“I’m sure if you went and spoke to some sleep experts and sports scientists, et cetera, the people that actually really know what’s important for athletes to recover, they would tell you that sleep is the number one thing, that that’s the most important thing. Finishing matches at 4 in the morning isn’t good for the players. I would also argue it’s not good for the sport, anyone involved in it.

“I do think there’s some quite simple things that can be done to change that. I think the US Open went to playing two matches in the day session. That would stop the day matches running into the night session starting too late. I think that’s quite a simple one that you could look at. You’d still get quality matches during the day. The people who bought ground passes would get to see more of the top players, which would be excellent for them.

“I think if you did that, you could also potentially bring the night sessions slightly earlier, as well, like 6:00 or 6:30. That time, those few hours, can make a difference to the players. I think that’s something that’s probably worth, yeah, considering moving forwards.”

Australian Open 2023: Reaction from Andy Murray

15:41 , Jamie Braidwood

“You never know exactly when the end is going to be. I would like to go out playing tennis like this, where I’m competing with the best players in the world in the biggest events and doing myself justice. There were maybe times the last year or so where I didn’t really feel like I was playing well, and I didn’t enjoy the way that I was playing. Yeah, those sacrifices and that effort that I put in allowed me to get through those matches and play at a high level that I think was entertaining for the people watching. I felt good about the way that I was playing. It’s more enjoyable for me when I’m playing like that, when I’m coming into a major event and really believing that I can do some damage. But, yeah, I can have a deeper run than the third round of a slam, there’s no question about that. Obviously draws can open up for you. I need to also help myself with that. If I was playing at this level last year, I probably wouldn’t be ranked 50, 60 in the world. It’s up to me to try and change that.”

Australian Open 2023: Reaction from Andy Murray

15:20 , Jamie Braidwood

“I gave everything that I had to this event. So I’m proud of that. That is really, in whatever you’re doing, all you can do. You can’t always control the outcome. You can’t control how well you’re going to play or the result. You can control the effort that you put into it, and I gave everything that I had the last three matches. I’m very proud of that. But, yeah, I’m also disappointed because I put loads of work into the beginning of this year and was playing well enough to have a really good run, have a deep run. I think even tonight I’m competing against a guy 20 in the world, you know, and it’s still very tight considering the circumstances. I feel like, yeah, I’m disappointed because I feel like I could have gone quite a bit further.”

Australian Open 2023: Reaction from Andy Murray

14:51 , Jamie Braidwood

“I slept from 6 until 9 the morning I played the match with Kokkinakis, which obviously isn’t enough. Then I had to come in here. I had about seven or eight blisters that I had to have drained and then he put this liquid in to dry it. I had to come in in the morning to give that time to settle. Then I went back to the hotel, slept for a few hours, and then hit for, like, 15 minutes yesterday. Yeah, just the ice baths, saw my physio. My feet didn’t feel great. My legs were actually okay. They weren’t too bad. But I was struggling with my lower back. That was affecting my serve. That was really the main thing that I was struggling with today.”

‘I gave everything I had’: Andy Murray ‘proud’ of memorable Australian Open run

14:25 , Jamie Braidwood

Andy Murray reminded himself what grand slam glory nights felt like at the Australian Open and hopes his memorable Melbourne run can be a sign of things to come.

The Scot somehow roused himself following his late-night heroics against Thanasi Kokkinakis to battle for another three hours and 29 minutes on Margaret Court Arena against Roberto Bautista Agut.

But this time there was not to be a happy ending as the metronomic Spaniard withstood a Murray fightback to win 6-1 6-7 (7) 6-3 6-4, ending British singles interest for another year in the third round.

“I feel like I gave everything that I had to this event, so I’m proud of that,” said the Scot, who spent 14 hours and three minutes on court during his three matches.

“That is really, in whatever you’re doing, all you can do. You can’t always control the outcome, you can’t control how well you’re going to play. But I’m also disappointed because I put loads of work into the beginning of this year and was playing well enough to have a really good run.

Novak Djokovic plays through the pain to beat Grigor Dimitrov at Australian Open

11:53 , Jamie Braidwood

Novak Djokovic continued to defy a hamstring injury as a straight-sets victory over Grigor Dimitrov sent him into the fourth round of the Australian Open.

The title favourite admitted after needing a medical timeout and dropping a set to French qualifier Enzo Couacaud that he was concerned, and a clash with 27th seed Dimitrov was a much better test of his physical condition.

He took another timeout after falling to the floor at the side of the court at the end of the first set but, despite continuing to limp and looking uncomfortable at times, clinched a 7-6 (7) 6-3 6-4 victory.
