Andy Robertson reveals Real Madrid inspiration growing up who then followed him on Instagram in 'highlight' moment
Andy Robertson has revealed the time he crossed paths with childhood idol Roberto Carlos and the buzz he got after an Instagram follow.
The Scotland skipper is currently in camp with Steve Clarke and the rest of the squad preparing for two big Nations League showdowns with Croatia and Poland in this international break. He arrives in camp with his Liverpool side flying high in both the English Premier League and Champions League and will be hoping to take that feelgood factor to bring the Tartan Army some cheer.
His path to the elite level with Liverpool has been nothing short of sensational with his incredible journey well documented . A rapid rise up the levels from Queen's Park to Dundee United and on to Hull City before Liverpool shelled out to bring him on board. It's since his arrival at Anfield he's made a real stamp on the professional game, winning both the Premier League and Champions League and skippering his country. Like every youngster, he had his idols he worshipped growing up in the game and it will come as no surprise Celtic idol Henrik Larsson is on the list. But as he realised he would not be a goalscorer and was a full-back his focus shifted to the pros in those positions.
Speaking in the latest episode of Reds Roundtable presented by Standard Chartered, he revealed: "I think when I was really young probably Henrik Larsson. I think he was the hero in Scotland. But I think as my career started moving on it was quite evident that I wasn't going to be a goalscorer so I had to shift my inspirations.
"Then it turned to the best in the world in they positions. I loved watching Philipp Lahm, I loved watching Ashley Cole. The full-back position kind of changed a bit but I just loved the way they kind of played. Roberto Carlos.
"They still attacked as well as defending and I always believed that was kind of the best way to do it I came across Roberto Carlos strangely enough when we played Real Madrid. He followed me on Instagram which was a highlight."
