Ange Postecoglou has five Tottenham players who can discuss summer transfer moves with new clubs
The January transfer window is now open for business. It is set to be a crucial month for Ange Postecoglou and Tottenham Hotspur as they look to make some key changes to the squad.
Spurs have endured some rotten luck on the injury front across the 2024/25 campaign and they currently sit 11th in the Premier League table at the halfway stage of the season. Postecoglou and his team need to find a way of getting back on track in the league, with January signings and players returning from injury potentially the big boost they need heading in the second half of the term.
As ever, all eyes will be on the transfer window to see what Tottenham do in the market. Incomings need to happen and there could possibly be some outgoings before the month is out even though the head coach has limited options to play with at present.

Aside from potential transfer deals, Spurs will soon need to make decisions over a number of players who are entering the final few months of their contract. Those in question will be able to leave Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on free transfers come the start of July if there is not a change in their situation prior to then.
From January 1, players in the final six months of their contract will be able to speak to foreign clubs about a pre-contract agreement for the 2025/26 season and beyond. As it is now New Year's Day, five Tottenham players can talk to prospective new clubs from today.
Here are the Tottenham quintet who will be out of contract this summer as things stand:
Son Heung-min
There is the possibility that Son Heung-min could depart Tottenham at the end of the season as he is now in the final few months of his Tottenham contract. Signed from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, the 32-year-old will mark a decade at the club this summer.
A pivotal player for Tottenham ever since his move from Germany, the experienced attacker has struggled to hit the heights this season and so far only has seven goals to his name from 22 appearances in all competitions. Although Son's deal is due to expire in the summer, Spurs do have the security of the extra year option which would tie him down until 2026.
Speaking in September, the club captain issued an update on his contract status and indicated that he was fully focused on the season rather than his own personal situation.
"We haven’t talked (about) anything yet. It was very clear for me, I’m very focused for this season," he said when previewing the Europa League tie against Qarabag. "At this age, every second is like a goal. Especially this season, we are in a lot of competitions, it feels like I’m taking even more care about this.
"I’m just fully focused on this situation and this year. I just want to win something that everybody in this club and these players and all around deserves. That’s what I’m working for.
"In the future, you never know what’s going to happen. But I will make sure I give everything for this club. It’s almost ten years that I give everything. We’ll see what happens. I still have a contract with the club which is the main important thing. I just want to give everything while I have my contract."
Sergio Reguilon
Sergio Reguilon has found himself back in the Tottenham team of late with Postecoglou extremely short on defensive options right now. The left-back came on for a rare outing against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup prior to Christmas, before getting 40 minutes to his name last Sunday in the 2-2 draw at home to Wolves after Destiny Udogie had to leave the field with a hamstring issue.
Reguilon quite clearly has no future at Tottenham and an exit from N17 looks a certainty to happen at some point in 2025. The ex-Real Madrid man ideally needs to leave this month so that he can get his career back on track elsewhere after limited football in recent seasons.
However, he may have more options if he waits until the summer to move as a few more clubs may be interested in signing him when he is a free agent. That would also be better from a financial perspective for the player as clubs may offer a sizeable signing-on fee since no transfer fee would be involved.
Regardless of whether he departs in January or the summer, Reguilon needs to leave for the good of his career.
Ben Davies
Long-serving defender Ben Davies is another player who has now entered the final six months of his contract. The Welshman may not be a Tottenham regular but he has always served the club well when called upon at the back.
Davies, who is currently in the treatment room with an injury, has played 11 times across the season so far and delivered a number of impressive performances at centre-back when selected by Postecoglou. Although it's clear to see that Tottenham do need to bring in some more defensive reinforcements in the upcoming transfer windows, the 31-year-old is someone who still has a lot to offer due to his experience and versatility.
Fraser Forster
Tottenham will also have to make a decision over what comes next for Fraser Forster. The 36-year-old is currently the man between the sticks for the team in Guglielmo Vicario's absence after the Italian had to undergo surgery on his ankle in November.
Forster has made a couple of high-profile errors in his game time but on the whole he has coped well and delivered some strong performances. Certainly not someone for the long-term future as he turns 37 in March, this summer may be the time for both parties to go their separate ways as Tottenham need to plan for the years ahead and bring in a goalkeeper who can push Vicario for his position in the team.
Alfie Whiteman
There could be some more movement in the goalkeeping department this summer as Alfie Whiteman's contract is also due to expire. Brandon Austin was in a similar boat this time last year but he went on to pen a new five-year contract at the end of May.
It remains to be seen what will happen with the Spurs academy graduate in the months ahead, especially if the north London club are to add to their options in goal. As Whiteman has three players ahead of him in the pecking order right now, and with young duo Josh Keeley and Luca Gunter also impressing, it may be time for the Spurs supporter to bid farewell to his boyhood club and go and obtain some first-team experience elsewhere.
