Ange Postecoglou has confirmed that James Maddison faces two to three weeks out with a calf strain but there is positive news regarding five of his Tottenham players ahead of Thursday's Elfsborg encounter. Spurs go into the Europa League match needing three points to secure their passage through to the round of 16 and avoid a two-legged knockout phase play-off tie in February.

Already without a number of first-team stars, Postecoglou was dealt a blow last weekend after Maddison missed out on the matchday squad to face Leicester City. Richarlison was then forced off nine minutes after the break with a groin issue, with Pape Matar Sarr also coming off at the same time and Postecoglou indicated that his midfielder "should not have played" as he wasn't fit for the 2-1 defeat.

In Tottenham's open training session at Hotspur Way on Wednesday morning, there was no sight of Maddison or Sarr on the training pitch with their teammates but Richarlison was present. Some other good news going into the game is that long-term absentees Micky van de Ven and Guglielmo Vicario took part in the session and the same goes for Yves Bissouma, who was an unused substitute in last weekend's Leicester loss.

Despite Sarr missing training, Postecoglou has confirmed that the midfielder is "ok and available" after leaving the field early on Sunday. Speaking at his pre-match press conference ahead of the Europa League tie against the Swedish side, Postecoglou provided an update on the injury front.

He said: "Micky is good, he's good to go. We'll try to get him some match minutes. He's had a good week, 10 days with the team. Madders has a calf strain, 2-3 weeks, Pape is ok, still a bit of a niggle, but he's ok and available and so is Biss."

On Cristian Romero's injury return, he added: "Cuti is a still of a slow burner and we’re mindful his injury is a bit different. Not on the horizon at the moment in terms of this weekend."

With a Romero return at Brentford on Sunday now appearing to be off the cards, Postecoglou at least looks like he will have Djed Spence available for selection once again.

"Djed will be fine for the weekend," confirmed the Australian. "Him and Reggy can't be involved tomorrow but he'll be fine."
