Hull City midfielder Regan Slater admits the club's form has left him annoyed after their disappointing season plunged to new depths with another cup exit to Doncaster Rovers and former boss Grant McCann.

After their stirring comeback against Leeds United, City were craving the chance to add a bit more momentum to take back into their league programme. For a team with just five competitive wins since last April, facing League Two opposition at home was the perfect chance.

That 1-1 draw and subsequent penalty defeat followed a similar pattern to recent results since Ruben Selles took charge last month, with the Tigers unable to back up positive results with more. And Slater says the manager has demanded more from his players in a bid to make that happen and drag themselves clear of the drop zone.

"I've not really thought about it like that, to be fair, but yes, it makes sense what you said there (about not creating momentum)," Slater told Hull Live. "I suppose it is a little bit annoying that we've not really got that consistency yet, but I don't think it's far away from happening at all.

"The gaffer spoke after and just said he needs that little bit more from us because in most games we've been in and around it, even if we're not quite at it performance-wise, we're still in the game every time and still get the chances and what have you. I think he's right in saying that he just needs that little bit more from us, and then it probably will happen."

City fashioned 19 attempts against Rovers, but had to wait until the final 10 minutes to score the equaliser with Gustavo Puerta guiding in his first goal in Europe after Mason Burstow's shot hit the post. But Slater says being clinical all over the pitch is what the head coach has asked for.

"Just in everything, really, not anything particular, just as a whole," he said. "If we just give a little bit more, whether it's making sure you win that tackle, taking that chance in front of goal or defending your goal. If we can all step up and do that we'll be in a good place."

Slater also says he feels more comfortable about his game now under Selles compared with the difficulties he faced previously under Tim Walter.

"Yes, definitely. I think, obviously, the way that the gaffer plays, I'm more used to playing that way, and you've got constant involvement in the game, which is nice. I feel like throughout games, I'm getting more of the ball," he continued.

"I'm not going long periods without actually touching it, which always helps, and then how we play in the system, it's obviously the license is there for the two eights to go and get forward and that's what I've been doing of late, I've been getting the chances, just not taking the chances."
