Tim Sherwood believes Trent Alexander-Arnold is one of the two best right-backs in Premier League history as he hit out at the Liverpool vice-captain’s critics. The England international is out of contract at the end of the season and continues to be linked with a move to Real Madrid.

The Spanish giants saw an approach for the full-back regarding a possible January transfer rejected by Liverpool on New Year’s Eve, though they remain interested in signing Alexander-Arnold on a Bosman transfer in the summer.

With his future the subject of intense speculation as a result, the 26-year-old faced further scrutiny when he struggled defensively against Manchester United earlier this month.

Sherwood has urged critics to focus on Alexander-Arnold’s strengths rather than weaknesses, before admitting that he believes that Real Madrid are the only club that could lure the boyhood Reds supporter away from Liverpool

“Trent Alexander-Arnold and Kyle Walker are the best right-backs in Premier League history in my opinion,” he told Discasino. “It actually annoys me when people refer to Trent as a right-back.

“He’s never been a proper defender, even when he lines up in the full-back position on the team sheet.

“I feel like we always try to look at what Trent can’t do, but I’m so indulged with what he can do, which far outweighs that.

“He’s probably one of the best passers we’ve ever seen in the Premier League alongside David Beckham – the way Trent delivers the ball from that right hand side is very similar to him. I think he’s got every pass in the locker and he creates for his teammates.

“Kyle Walker also needs to be included as one of the best – he has a unique skill set that was very different to Trent’s, but nobody could get past him down that right-hand side and he’s won so much with Manchester City.”

He continued: “I think Real Madrid are the only team who would be able to prise him away from Liverpool.

“I don’t think he’d go anywhere unless it’s to the Bernabeu. If Real Madrid weren’t in the conversation, then I think he’d sign a new deal at Anfield, but the lure of that white shirt could be the reason he leaves.

“I don’t think there’s a better right-back in Premier League history than him and Walker.”
