Anthony Gordon shows his class with touching gesture to Newcastle United supporter

Anthony Gordon's stock continues to rise off the pitch, as well as on it, after the reasons for his previously unseen celebration after scoring his first ever goal for England's senior side came to light.

The Newcastle United wide man found the net with a cool volley in the Three Lions' 5-0 win over Ireland on Sunday, capping off a fine week for the Magpies' stars in Lee Carsley's squad.

After Gordon's team-mates headed back to their positions after his strike, the former Everton star performed an improvised cartwheel before blowing a kiss to the camera. It has since been revealed the touching gesture was aimed towards a young Newcastle United fan battling hyper IGE syndrome.

Ivy, the young girl who suffers with the rare, inherited immune deficiency disorder that causes high levels of immunoglobulin E, met Gordon last month and performed her 'favourite celebration' - a cartwheel - which the Newcastle star promised to replicate next time he found the net.

Gordon told England’s media team: “I’ve been thinking about doing it for a long time, it’s for a little girl, a great cause, a little girl called Ivy that I got the pleasure to spend time with.

“She’s got hyper IGE syndrome, such a pleasure to be around her and I promised her I’d do that celebration for her and I’m a man of my word.”

Gordon has recently emerged as a regular for England, just months after struggling to get a look in under Gareth Southgate as his country reached the Euro 2024 final. Interim boss Lee Carsley, who has worked closely with Gordon in recent years, backed the wide man with a run of games in the senior side during his temporary period in charge.

"It is better late than never, but it is about time!" joked Gordon after scoring his first England goal. "I’ve had some great chances but not been able to put them away.

"It was a good feeling to see it hit the net. I got to celebrate it with some of the lads I have come through the England set-up with. That made it a bit more special.

"I think Lee Carsley deserves a lot of credit. He fills us with so much confidence. I finally have a goal now, so hopefully there will be plenty to come."
