Everton manager Frank Lampard has responded to rumours Anthony Gordon could leave for Tottenham and heaped praise on new player James Tarkowski.
Everton have already sold one player to Spurs as Brazil forward Richarlison went to north London in a £60million move. Amid those talks, Spurs asked about Gordon’s availability.
Everton told Antonio Conte’s side he was not eligible for transfer due to his importance to the Toffees. Gordon is also an Everton academy graduate and has a strong relationship with their fans due to this.
Spurs are monitoring Gordon and could make a bid if anything major changes, such as Everton’s finances or top-flight status.
But for now, Lampard has warned interested clubs they have little chance of snatching the winger.
“He is a link to the crowd, a link to the fans. He is going nowhere and that is a hugely important thing for me,” the manager said (via The Independent). “He is the sort of player we want to build and go forward with.”
Gordon will wear the number 10 shirt next season after a top campaign in 2021-22. On this, Lampard said: “He has worked for it. You have to earn the No 10. I understand this desire for numbers.
“I was fortunate, I fell into the No 8 [at Chelsea]. I understand it, especially the 10, it has this magic to it, the flair, and he has it, especially in his own style. He deserves it, absolutely.”
Tarkowski a proven Premier League player – Frank Lampard
Lampard also spoke about new arrival Tarkowski. The centre-back joined Everton earlier this month after leaving Burnley at the end of his contract.
“He is a player I have admired for a long time, since before working at Everton,” Lampard said. “He is proven Premier League quality and durability. When you look at his numbers at Burnley, a lot of them have been based on a robust desire not to be beaten.
“He’s got great physicality, he is great in both boxes and really good on the ball. I am pleased we got it done quickly.
“I am sure he is going to be a big player and Evertonians are going to love him. He is a leader, I have seen that straight away and we need leaders.”
Lampard is right about Tarkowski. Everton lacked leaders during their relegation fight last term and Tarkowski will help to rectify this issue. He took part in several relegation scraps during his time with Burnley and should help to turn things around at Goodison Park.
It is also vital Everton keep Gordon. He is one of their most exciting players and is often an outlet when they are soaking up pressure.
Allowing Gordon to go would cause uproar among Everton fans, especially if he left for another Premier League team.
Keeping Gordon and signing Tarkowski are two clever moves from Everton. Now they need to complete more shrewd transfers to get themselves back up the Prem table.
One option is Adama Traore, and the Toffees will reportedly need to pay just £10m to sign him. However, the Spaniard has a different move in mind.
