Anthony Joshua's world title defence against Kubrat Pulev could now take place at the O2 Arena in November in front of a reduced crowd of around 2,000 people, according to Eddie Hearn.

Matchroom are still working on a new date and venue for Joshua's IBF, WBO and WBA (Super) title defences against Pulev, a bout which was originally scheduled for the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in July.

Boxing has since returned behind closed doors with Matchroom's Fight Camp series at their headquarters in Brentwood kicking off on August 1. The government confirmed last week sporting events will allow fans to return from October 1 with social distancing in place, with the World Snooker Championships at the Crucible in Sheffield, also to be staged by Matchroom, one of a handful of test events in the coming weeks.

And Hearn hopes the success of that pilot event will go some way in dictating how crowds can return to boxing in the autumn.

“We are all now working towards crowds in October, but socially distance crowds,” Hearn said. “I do think there is a good chance in November or December we can start going some way in filling up the O2 and the O2 for Anthony Joshua vs Kubrat Pulev would make perfect sense.

"But first things first to deliver a perfect test event for the government via the snooker and then in October bring the crowds back for our events in Cardiff and Newcastle. We expect limited capacity even at that stage and then hopefully, if they are successful, be able to fill up arenas in November and December."

Hearn suggested crowds of 'maybe 2000' could be possible for Joshua vs Pulev at the O2.

“That’s a fight where there are a lot of options. It might not be at the O2 but we could look to do that fight in front of that number of people in the right sort of environment.”

Oleksandr Usyk’s meeting with Dereck Chisora was another huge heavyweight clash postponed as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic and Hearn also hopes to stage that fight in front of a reduced crowd at the O2 at the end of October.

During boxing’s downtime, Chisora has fuelled talk of a switch to mixed martial arts with MMA promotion Bellator in recent weeks but Hearn insists the 36-year-old is fully focused on challenging the undefeated Usyk.

“I think he [Chisora] wants to just get people talking. I don’t see an MMA move for him just yet but who knows, maybe. I spoke to David Haye [Chisora’s manager] today and he is firmly focused on Usyk.”
