Anthony Pettis Takes On Edson Barboza at UFC 197

A lightweight bout between two of the division's most dynamic strikers has been added to the UFC 197: Cormier vs. Jones 2 fight card.

Former champion Anthony Pettis (18-4) faces Edson Barboza (16-4) on April 23 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas. UFC officials announced the matchup on Wednesday.

Pettis captured the 155-pound title by defeating former titleholder Benson Henderson at UFC 164 in August 2013. He defended the belt once, submitting former Strikeforce champion Gilbert Melendez at UFC 181 in December 2014. He lost the title to Rafael dos Anjos in March 2015 and is coming off a loss to Eddie Alvarez in his last outing. “Showtime” hopes to rebound from back-to-back losses when he squares off against Barboza.

Barboza is coming off a loss to Tony Ferguson in his last outing, but earned Fight of the Night honors in the defeat. He's earned two consecutive Fight of the Night awards and has a solid shot at making it three in-a-row when he meets Pettis in April.

UFC 197: Jones vs. Cormier 2 is headlined by the light heavyweight title fight between champion Daniel Cormier and former titleholder Jon Jones. Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson puts his title on the line in the co-main event against unbeaten Henry Cejudo. The fight card is also expected to featured the return of former two-division champion B.J. Penn.
