Tottenham have announced the signing of Spanish right-back Pedro Porro on loan from Sporting Lisbon with the obligation to buy this summer.

Porro, who was on Manchester City’s books between 2019 and 2022, has penned a five-and-a-half-year contract at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. He will wear the number 23 shirt for Antonio Conte’s side.

Tottenham have been in negotiations with Sporting for Porro for several weeks now. It took a while for the two clubs to reach an agreement. And even when they struck one, Sporting altered their demands at the last minute.

Spurs pressed ahead with discussions though and have now been successful. They announced Porro’s arrival in north London with the following statement: ‘We are delighted to announce the signing of Pedro Porro from Sporting CP.

‘The right-back will join the Club on loan until the end of the season, with an obligation to make the deal permanent in the summer. He will wear the number 23 shirt.’

Spurs are expected to pay €45million (£40m) for the one-cap Spain international.

The 23-year-old, who has made five appearances in this season’s Champions League, should go straight into Conte’s starting eleven at right wing-back. Emerson Royal will provide him with backup.

While Porro has moved to Spurs, chairman Daniel Levy has offloaded two other options in the position. Djed Spence has joined French side Rennes on loan until the end of the season. There is no option for Rennes to buy the Englishman.

Matt Doherty, meanwhile, has agreed to end his contract early so he can link up with Atletico Madrid.

Pedro Porro to sort out wing-back issues

Conte will be delighted about Porro joining. He is a step up on Spence, Emerson and Doherty as none of those three have been able to impress the manager.

Spurs have now improved the position though and Porro will help the club in their pursuit of silverware. They remain in the FA Cup and Champions League, while they could also make the Premier League’s top four.

Meanwhile, Spurs have successfully raided London rivals Chelsea for a teenage hotshot.
