Antonio Conte has explained why Tottenham Hotspur will be letting some players leave this summer after omitting several from pre-season preparations.

Tottenham have just one pre-season fixture left on their schedule before the 2022-23 Premier League gets underway. They will be facing their former manager Jose Mourinho’s AS Roma side in Israel on Saturday.

Several players have not made the trip, just as they were left out for prior fixtures in South Korea and Scotland. Harry Winks, Sergio Reguilon, Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele have played no part in this pre-season, for example, amid links with moves elsewhere.

None of them have been able to secure an exit away from Tottenham just yet, though. However, Conte has now clarified why they are in agreement that they should depart.

He told a press conference: “I think that we spoke with the club and the players are informed about the plans for the next season.

“We are talking about really good players and the club and I, we think they deserve to play games regularly. For this reason these players are not here.”

Another player reported to be on the verge of leaving Tottenham is Joe Rodon. The Wales international is close to signing for Ligue 1 outfit Rennes on a season-long loan with an option for a permanent transfer.

Rodon barely played for Spurs last season; in fact, he has played more for his country than his club in 2022. Therefore, Conte has no problem with his departure in view of the World Cup, for which Wales have qualified.

Antonio Conte explains Joe Rodon logic

Conte reiterated: “Yeah, Joe Rodon is another good player and don’t forget that in November there is the World Cup and many players want to play and play regularly. Also to prepare themselves for this important competition.

“I think that when the thoughts from the club and the players are the same we try to find the best solution for both.”

Tottenham have been busy making signings of their own, though. Ivan Perisic, Fraser Forster, Yves Bissouma, Richarlison, Clement Lenglet and Djed Spence have all been added to Conte’s squad.

Hence, they should still have plenty of depth to compete in four tournaments over the course of the upcoming season.

So far during their pre-season fixtures, they have gone unbeaten. A draw with Sevilla was sandwiched between wins over Team K League and Rangers.

They will be hoping to go into the new campaign – having refreshed their squad – still on a positive note. Hopes are high they can remain competitive for another top-four finish in what is the last season of Conte’s contract.
