Antonio Conte sack latest: Report reveals how Daniel Levy played massive role in Tottenham boss’ meltdown with double signing snub
It’s been claimed that Tottenham chairman Daniel Levy played a major role in Antonio Conte’s now infamous rant following the draw at bottom club Southampton last weekend.
The Italian stunned reporters, media, Spurs fans and players alike with his very public attack on the squad and the club after his side threw away a 3-1 lead late on to eventually draw 3-3 in a result that damaged their hopes of a top-four finish.
Conte suggested that his players cannot cope with pressure, while also questioning the ‘comfort’ culture that has been in place under Levy over the past 20 years.
He said: “I think it’s much better to go into the problem. Because the problem is that, for another time we showed that we are not a team.
“We are 11 players that go into the pitch. I see selfish players, I see players that don’t want to help each other and don’t put their heart (in).
“Why? Because they are used to it here, they are used to it. They don’t play for something important yeah. They don’t want to play under pressure, they don’t want to play under stress.
“It is easy in this way. Tottenham’s story is this. Twenty years there is the owner and they never won something but why? The fault is only for the club, or for every manager that stays here. I have seen the managers that Tottenham had on the bench.”
And now journalist Wayne Veysey has reportedly shared the real reason behind Conte’s meltdown over the weekend.
Veysey claims on Football Insider that it was a ‘clear’ behind-scenes decision by Levy that eventually led to Conte unleashing his verbal tirade on Saturday evening.
He states that the club supremo refused to sanction moves for two of Conte’s top transfer targets, Romelu Lukaku and Stefan de Vrij – players Conte thought would turn Tottenham into genuine title contenders this season.
Levy snubbed chance to land Conte favourites
However, Levy made it very clear that he would not move for the Belgians, which left Conte ‘hugely frustrated’.
Spurs have given the Italian a healthy transfer budget since last summer though. £155million has been spent, although it’s reported some of the players signed were not actually wanted by Conte.
The former Chelsea boss, for example, has already revealed that he did not want Djed Spence. The former Middlesbrough man ended up being loaned out to Rennes in January.
There have also been major questioned marks raised over the January loan signing of Arnaut Danjuma.
The Dutchman impressed in a cameo appearance from the bench in the FA Cup win at Preston. He actually scored on his debut but has hardly been seen since.
Conte is currently back in Italy enjoying a short holiday while the international break has taken centre stage.
However, he is fully expected to get his marching orders before his contract actually runs out this summer.
And with no new permanent manager currently lined up, it’s thought that assistant coach Ryan Mason will once again be handed the interim reins.
Tottenham are back in action on April 3 when they head to Everton in the Premier League.
